MAILED: April 23, 2002
EAU CLAIRE — Education students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will share the results of semester-long diversity research projects during the Spring 2002 Fed 385 Research Expo Thursday, April 25.
The Research Expo, which will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center, will feature projects designed by 110 students currently enrolled in four sections of the foundation of education's "Social Foundations of Human Relations" course, taught by Dr. Cynthia Gray-Mash and Dr. Katherine Rhoades. The event has been held each semester since the fall of 1998.
Examples of research projects to be displayed include:
"It's Greek to Me: A Study of Math Anxiety"
"The Effects of September 11 on School and Muslim Americans"
"The Evolution of Diversity in Children's Books"
"Lunchroom Culture in Three Eau Claire Schools"
"Face of Depression: Facts & Misconceptions of Students at UW-Eau Claire"
"I'm a Slave for 4U: A Study of the Britney Spears Culture "
"A Way of Life: The Hospital Sisters of St. Francis"
"Let's Talk About Sex: A Study of Rural and Urban Sex Education"
"The projects introduce students to research as applied to the understanding of cultural complexity and reflective processes that strengthen professional practice in teaching and other professions," said Gray-Mash, assistant professor of foundation of education, noting that this year the group is taking inspiration from Margaret Mead, who said that inquiry "demands the open-mindedness with which one must look and listen, record in astonishment and wonder that which one would not have been able to guess."
The event is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact Gray-Mash at (715) 836-5587 or send her e-mail at gray@uwec.edu or contact Rhoades at (715) 836-3672 or e-mail her at rhoadeka@uwec.edu.
