Flamenco Guitarist Michael Hauser
To Headline Summer Program July 19

 MAILED:  July 6, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - Michael Hauser, "one of America's few masters of the emotional flamenco guitar" (Mpls./St. Paul Magazine), will open UW-Eau Claire's Summer Session Programs for the week of July 19. His free outdoor show will begin at 7 p.m. Monday on the Central Campus Mall. Refreshments will be sold.

One of only a handful of flamenco guitar masters residing in the U.S. today, Hauser has studied with Spain's greatest flamenco guitarists, and also studied classical guitar with Andres Segovia's protégé Jesus Silva. He is currently on the music faculty at Macalaster College in St. Paul, where he is initiating a program in flamenco studies. His concerts combine flamenco guitar solos inspired by the great flamenco legends with his own original compositions and classical works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz and Enrique Granados.

"The Big Lebowski" (1998) will continue the Summer Cinema festival of films by Joel and Ethan Coen Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Thugs break into the apartment of Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) in the errant belief that they are accosting another Jeff Lebowski, the Big Lebowski, an eccentric philanthropist. Instead, they threaten and soil the carpet of the lesser Lebowski, a genial deadbeat known as "The Dude." Seeking restitution, The Dude and his bowling buddies (John Goodman, Steve Buscemi) are swept up in a kidnap caper involving German nihilists, a porn king (Ben Gazarra) and an avant-garde painter (Julianne Moore).

"It's a pinball arcade of a flick," wrote the Toronto Globe and Mail. "The Coens invent a bunch of wonderfully flaky characters, stick them into a Plexiglas narrative, and let them bounce off each other."

Rated R, the 117-minute color film will screen via DVD projection. Admission is free.

Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 5. A complete schedule is available from the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833, and on the Web.
