EAU CLAIRE — The American Record Guide, one of the most important publications in the recording industry, recently reviewed UW-Eau Claire music professor and pianist Alexandre Dossin’s CD recording of works by Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Liszt and Prokofiev.
“There is no denying that he has the dexterity and musical skills to bring this diverse collection off,” wrote Alan Becker in the January/February 2004 issue of the American Record Guide. “He also eschews showiness and emphasizes refinement in all of these works.”
According to Becker, Dossin’s best was illustrated in his performance of Listz’s “Dante Sonata,” where “all the ferocious difficulties are conquered without compromising musical values.” He also wrote that “Dossin’s Chopin is a model of how to avoid eccentricities and let the music speak for itself,” a comment that particularly pleased Dossin, who said it reflects perfectly his philosophy as a performer.
“It is doubtful listeners will be able to resist once they have listened,” Becker concluded.
Dossin has received numerous honors and awards, including the first and special prizes at the prestigious second Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
His upcoming performances will include a solo concert at UW-Eau Claire March 11 and a special appearance as a guest soloist with the University Orchestra April 25.
