To Participate in Summer Food Service Program

EAU CLAIRE - Stressing the importance of good nutrition, the National Youth Sports
Program and Upward Bound program announce the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service
Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Summer Food Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious
meals to needy children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school
meals are unavailable. Free meals will be made available to eligible children
18 years of age and younger. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by
a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled
and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during
the regular school year may receive free meals as well.
Last summer, 80 sponsors operating 400 sites served over 1.2 million meals to
children in Wisconsin. "This program fills a void created when school lunches
are not available," said Thomas R. Patt, director of university recreation.
"Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength
of this program."
Sponsors of the USDA program must agree to serve meals that meet program requirements,
demonstrate financial and administrative capabilities to operate the program,
and document that adequate supervisory and operational personnel are available.
Also, because the program serves needy children, sponsors must document that each
site serves an area in which at least one-half of the children are eligible for
free or reduced-price meals. Camp sponsors are reimbursed for needy children only.
In accordance with Federal law and USDA policy, UW-Eau Claire is prohibited from
