New Associate Vice Chancellor Named to
Supervise Critical Student Services

 MAILED:  March 20, 2003

EAU CLAIRE - Kimberly Barrett has been named associate vice chancellor for student development and diversity at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Barrett's appointment was announced today by Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ron Satz.

Barrett is currently vice provost for student affairs at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Canada. Before joining Lakehead, she was associate provost and dean of students at Southeast Missouri State University.

Barrett holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Pfeiffer College in North Carolina, a master of science degree in clinical psychology from Murray State University in Kentucky, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Southern Illinois University.

At UW-Eau Claire, Barrett will serve as the dean of students and also will supervise the Academic Skills Center, Advising and Academic Testing (which also coordinates orientation for both new and transfer students and their parents), American Ethnic Coordinating staff, Career Services, Counseling Center, Health Services, Services for Students with Disabilities and student services extramural grant programs. In addition, she will serve as a liaison to the Student Senate. Barrett will be a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Council and the Chancellor's Executive and Administrative staffs.

"Kimberly Barrett has a breadth and depth of experience that will benefit students, faculty and administration at UW-Eau Claire," Satz said. "She is extremely well versed in issues pertaining to student development and diversity, student retention, accreditation/assessment, and a variety of support services to promote academic success as well as personal and career development of students."

The decision to hire Barrett was made despite looming state budget cuts because the position is pivotal to providing leadership to numerous offices that support student services, Satz said.

"We have left a number of administrative positions open, including associate vice chancellor for Business Services, director of Human Resources, athletics director and director of the Teaching and Learning Technology Development Center," Satz said. "But this position is critical to our core mission of serving students. Leaving it vacant would have left a huge void in our student services area."

Barrett will begin her duties at UW-Eau Claire July 1.

"This new position provides for me what I believe we all look for in our work, the opportunity to pursue the things about which we are passionate in a vibrant, dynamic, collegial environment," Barrett said. "My passions are finding ways to help people capitalize on the cultural diversity that characterizes our society and to help students reach their unique potential. The excellent people and programs at UW-Eau Claire provide a strong foundation upon which these goals can be achieved."

Barrett replaces Ann Lapp, dean of students and director of Academic and Career Services, who will retire June 30.
