The university enrolls 10,500 students and offers an extraordinary undergraduate experience in the classic sense of a student-centered, residential campus serving full-time, traditional age students. It has earned a national reputation as an outstanding public university. Its quality has consistently earned citations in U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges Guide, as well as in other publications that evaluate quality. It offers graduate programs in several fields, including business, education and nursing. In April 2002, the university announced its first comprehensive fund-raising campaign with a goal of $35 million, and the goal was achieved more than a year ahead of schedule.

Wayne State College – Wayne, Neb.

During the 10-year period, strong teaching was prioritized, comprehensive student support services were enhanced, and the role and mission of a regional public college were clarified and communicated regionally and statewide. Campus morale was improved, the college's image was sharpened, and confidence in the college's ability to do its work was heightened. Enrollment increased dramatically. The college's first comprehensive fund-raising campaign was planned and completed. Forty full-time faculty positions were added. The campus was computerized. Public service activities were increased significantly. The development of the college's first physical master plan in 1990 guided an ambitious construction and renovation program.

George Mason University – Fairfax, Va.

George Mason University is a public comprehensive Virginia university in the Washington, D.C., area enrolling more than 20,000 students in professional and liberal arts programs. Degrees are offered through the Ph.D. and include a law degree. The university has been marked by rapid growth and development, particularly during the late 1970s and through the 1980s. Between 1975 and 1988, the university's enrollment grew from 6,500 to 18,500 with a commensurate growth in the physical campus and curriculum.
