UW-Eau Claire again gets national service honor
UW-Eau Claire was among 83 public and private colleges, universities and professional schools named in the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service, compiled by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
UW-Eau Claire and Marquette University are the only two schools in Wisconsin named to the 2008 Honor Roll with Distinction. UW-Eau Claire is the only Wisconsin school, public or private, named to the Honor Roll with Distinction every one of the three years since the honor roll was instituted in 2006. Full story.
Chancellor provides budget process update
University employees are invited to share their budget reduction suggestions via an online form available on the chancellor's home page. Links to each of the chancellor's recent budget-related e-mail messages also are available there.
New online campus events calendar goes live
This system provides several advantages over the previous system, one of the biggest being that it integrates with existing campus systems. Event data from a University Centers application and other similar systems can be directly imported into it, eliminating the need for duplicate data entry.
Data can also be exported. This means users can set up an RSS feed to a feed reader, automatically pull events from the system to a Web site or add an event to a personal calendar. Users also can subscribe to a particular calendar grouping and receive e-mail notification of new events, e-mail events to friends or set up event reminders.
The UW-Eau Claire News Bureau encourages all university departments and units to include their events in the new calendar system. Since the calendar is a public display, event descriptions should state if an event is for a limited audience, such as UW-Eau Claire staff or students only.

University Writing Center opens in CETL
Once a composition lab offering help only to students struggling with writing assignments, the new University Writing Center has a broader mission: to help university students, faculty and staff with writing tasks for any purpose or discipline.
Dr. Karen Welch, director of the English Composition Program, is serving as interim director of the University Writing Center.
"The Writing Center isn't only for struggling writers," Welch said. "It is a place for all writers on this campus to discuss their drafts or writing tasks, to seek feedback from trained staff, and to use what they learn in those discussions to review and help strengthen their writing." Full story.

“We are convinced that this is the right path for our State, and we will continue working closely with the Governor and the Legislature, encouraging them to provide us with the level of investment that will let us keep at least part of the Growth Agenda alive as we struggle through this recession,” Reilly said in a UW System news release about the February meeting of the system's Board of Regents in Madison.
Reilly also announced the formation of a task force charged with studying the UW research, patent, and commercialization process. The Research to Jobs Task Force also will make recommendations for establishing benchmarks and outcomes to facilitate getting the research that is taking place at UW institutions to the private sector more expeditiously.For complete details, see the Day 1 and Day 2 summaries of the regents' February meeting.

Concert Choir to perform at Kennedy Center Feb. 16
Schwartzhoff is artistic director for the event, leading his choir as well as several other high school, university and community choirs. Seven choirs comprised of 265 singers from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Illinois and Wisconsin will perform.
The festival will culminate in an afternoon concert at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 — Presidents' Day — at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The choirs will perform with the McLean Symphony Orchestra of McLean, Va.The UW-Eau Claire Concert Choir also will perform a solo evensong concert in the National Cathedral Feb. 15. Full story.
In the fall of 2007, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation established the Student Organizations Opportunity Fund, which provides funding to recognized student organizations for events and activities.
"The funding can be used for travel to a conference or workshop, for supplies or to support a community service event as well as other uses," said Angela Bong, UW-Eau Claire student leadership and organization coordinator. "Student organizations can apply for a $250 award once per semester.”
The fund has been used by groups as diverse as the Student Homeless Awareness Chapter, Foodlums, the Native American Student Association and Disc Golf Club, to name a few of the organizations to receive funding this year. The Student Homeless Awareness Chapter used the fund to purchase food for Thanksgiving baskets for 20 families living in poverty identified by Beacon House, the local family homeless shelter.
"For students who participated in this event, it was their first encounter with how homelessness affects families during the holiday season," said Megan Callahan, a member of SHAC. "I believe many young people take their holiday traditions for granted, and SHAC members are able to further understand and appreciate their lifestyle through this event." Full story.
ORSP to select 2009-10 Faculty Fellow
Thanks to grant from Northwestern Mutual Foundation and a private gift from UW-Eau Claire alumnus Rick Schroder '77 and his wife, Evelyn Zabo, 10 UW-Eau Claire information systems students now own their own laptop computers. Each student received $700 to purchase a laptop that meets College of Business computing requirements.
Beginning with the fall 2009 semester, students in more than 20 business classes must have in-class access to their own laptop computers. Persistent budget cuts forced the College of Business to implement the cost-saving measure.
Because the information systems department is piloting the new technology requirement this spring, students enrolled in four IS courses must be ready to bring their portable computers to class in January, nine months before other business students are required to do so.Dr. Thomas Hilton, IS department chair, was concerned about the 20 percent of College of Business students who may not be financially able to satisfy the laptop requirement. So he solicited funds from companies and private donors to establish a laptop relief fund to aid his department’s neediest students. Full story.
This spring, for the first time students in UW-Eau Claire marketing professor Bob Erffmeyer's sales management classes will use "Sales Management — Shaping Future Leaders," a new book Erffmeyer co-authored with Jeff Tanner (Baylor University, Texas) and Earl Honeycutt (Elon University, North Carolina).
The new textbook prepares students to become effective sales managers by integrating current technology, research and strategic-thinking activities. An entire chapter is devoted to using customer relationship management (CRM) technology when conducting business in sales organizations. Adopters of the book also will receive access to Aplicor, a third-party CRM tool that is widely used in the industry.
“Our text is up-to-date and fresh,” Erffmeyer said. “It is really the first 'new' sales management book written in about 15 years.” Full story.
Education strategies designed to help all children succeed will be the topic of a presentation by nationally recognized child advocate Rick Miller during the sixth annual UW-Eau Claire Martin Mogensen Education Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in Schofield Auditorium.
Miller's "Kids at Risk, Kids at Hope" lecture will focus on how schools and nonprofit agencies can adopt a cultural strategic framework to support the success of all children. The presentation, sponsored by the College of Education and Human Services and the Eau Claire Area School District, is free and open to the public. Full story.
Internship Mania set for Feb. 11
Organizations, businesses and agencies from the Chippewa Valley and other parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa will be at the event. Recruiters will field questions about their companies, accept resumes for internship opportunities and share information about their industries.
