Scientist to speak on intelligent design, evolution
The Chippewa Valley Dialogue on Science and Religion will host guest lecturer Kenneth Miller for a free discussion about intelligent design and evolutionary science from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in UW-Eau Claire's Schofield Auditorium Miller, a professor of biology at Brown University, is a preeminent evolutionary scientist and the author of the most widely used high school biology textbook in America, as well as "Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground between God and Evolution." He was the lead witness in the Pennsylvania intelligent design case involving a group of parents who are suing the school district for requiring high school biology teachers to read a four-paragraph statement to students that casts doubt on Darwin's theory of evolution. Students, staff and faculty are invited to come when they can and stay as long as their schedules allow. Beverages will be provided. Outcomes of today's dialogue and a previous session held Oct. 10 will be shared with the University Planning Committee, which will draft the final strategic plan. College of Nursing and Health Sciences reorganizes The three former nursing departments (family health nursing, adult health nursing, and nursing systems) have been brought together into a single department of nursing. Dr. Mary Zwygart-Stauffacher, associate dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, is serving as interim chair of the nursing department until a search for a permanent chair can be completed. In other changes to the college structure, the environmental public health program is now the single program in the public health professions department. Two other programs — music therapy and health care administration — have moved to other university departments. The music therapy program has joined the department of music and theatre arts in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the health care administration program has moved to the management and marketing department in the College of Business. A new position has been added to enhance student services in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Dr. Sheila Smith, a professor of nursing who joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty in 1989, has accepted the position of assistant dean for prelicensure programs. In addition, Dr. Robin Beeman, associate professor of nursing, has had her title changed from coordinator of the nursing department's Marshfield site to assistant dean-Marshfield site. The duties of the position have not changed. Disability Awareness Month update:
Recent and upcoming events are marking UW-Eau Claire's observance of Disability Awareness month in October: • An Oct. 15 ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the official opening of a new universal-design pedestrian ramp in UW-Eau Claire's Hibbard parking lot. Pictured above during the ceremony were (left to right) Terry Classen, director of facilities planning and management; Randy Palmer, landscape architect and grounds supervisor in facilities planning and management; Kathleen Hurley, director of services for students with disabilities; and Kimberly Barrett, associate vice chancellor for student development and diversity.
• The UW-Eau Claire Student Senate announced last week the first- and second-place winners in its Disability Awareness Poster Contest. First place went to sophomore Lisa Butterfield, and second place went to senior Dianne Chlupsa.Their posters, pictured at right, are on display through Oct. 27 in Davies Center in the display case across from the TV lounge. • The Disability Awareness Celebration/Reception will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Presidents Room of Davies Center to honor Services for Students with Disabilities scholarship recipients; Student Senate poster contest winners; and faculty awardees Dr. Margaret Devine and Dr. Rosemary Battalio, who have been exceptionally supportive of the needs of students with disabilities. Diversity awareness campaign adds new posters
In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, a poster featuring Allen Ramsey, a graduate student with a visual impairment, will be added to the UW-Eau Claire diversity awareness campaign. The Ramsey poster and a second new poster featuring Amy Soh-Jin Krause, a recent art graduate, will be displayed on bulletin boards across campus. The diversity awareness campaign now includes 16 posters with photos of UW-Eau Claire students, faculty, staff and alumni, along with quotes from the individuals about what makes them diverse. The campaign addresses all types of diversity, including but not limited to race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, geographic diversity and people with mental or physical disabilities. For more information about the diversity campaign, to make a suggestion or to receive a copy of a poster for your department or office, contact Kimberly Barrett, Student Development and Diversity, at 836-5992 or barretka@uwec.edu.
