English professors' fund supports symposium During the symposium, students from 25 sections of the introductory college writing course, a required course for all students, will read Perry's book "Population: 485 - Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time." Perry, a 1987 UW-Eau Claire nursing graduate, will hold four 50-minute discussions with students on the writing process on Sept. 24-25. The symposium also will include a reading by Perry on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium that is free and open to the public. Full story. Friends of Autism gift goes to CAP program
UW-Eau Claire psychology students will have more opportunities to conduct research and serve local children diagnosed with autism thanks to a $10,000 donation from the Friends of Autism. The money was raised through the eighth annual Friends of Autism Golf Classic held Aug. 21 at the Silver Spring Country Club in Menomonee Falls and given to the UW-Eau Claire Campus Autism Program (CAP). The university autism program brings psychology students, children with autism and their families together and offers intensive behavior intervention. "This will provide more research funding as well as present valuable learning opportunities for both the students and the children with autism they work with," said Kevin Klatt, UW-Eau Claire associate psychology professor and coordinator of the CAP program. "It's a real win-win situation for both the families and the students. There are very few universities that have students providing services to families and almost none providing research opportunities for undergraduates." Full story. A series of strategic planning charrettes — collaborative sessions at which university faculty, staff and students can learn more about proposed strategic planning ideas and submit their own ideas — will be held Sept. 18-20 and 24 in Davies Center. Representatives from each of the six strategic planning work groups will be on hand at the charrettes to explain and answer questions about the groups' proposals. Faculty, staff and students who attend a charrette should prepare by reading the proposals, available on the strategic planning Web site, said MJ Brukhardt, special assistant to the chancellor for strategic planning. Charrette participants also will be invited to write their ideas and comments regarding the work group proposals on posters set up in the meeting room. For more information about the process, read "What's a Charrette and Why Attend One?" South African social worker to be guest lecturer Pillay will serve as a guest lecturer from Sept. 19-28 in the department of social work. A social worker at Durban Children's Home in Durban, South Africa, Pillay supervises social work interns from UW-Eau Claire and KwaZulu-Natal University in Durban. During her time at UW-Eau Claire, Pillay will speak to students in social work and economics classes, make class presentations on topics related to South Africa, and will meet with students interested in interning in South Africa. Pillay also will present "Orphans of AIDS in South Africa" from noon-1 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. The presentation is open to the campus and greater Eau Claire communities. John Means has been named a major gifts officer for the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. As a major gifts officer, Means will work in close coordination with the director of major gifts, focusing on one-on-one cultivation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors. Means, former director of golf and former head men's golf coach at the University of Minnesota, raised over $3 million to endow that university's golf program. Means has been the UW-Eau Claire head women's golf coach since 2006 and will remain head coach in addition to his work with the Foundation. Full story.
