Opening address stresses strategic planning, strengthening community partnerships
"If we are to compete, we need to change." Those were the words of UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich Aug. 21 as he addressed finalizing and implementing a new strategic vision for the university. The words were part of his state-of-the-university address, delivered to nearly 800 university faculty and staff members, as well as several community leaders and state legislators, following the Blugold Breakfast in Zorn Arena. In addition to strategic planning, the chancellor focused on a second major policy initiative, broadening the borders of the university by strengthening and expanding community partnerships. Change also was the theme of an address by Marty Wood, University Senate chair, who spoke to faculty and academic staff about the need for innovations in the way governance works at UW-Eau Claire. Eight receive faculty/staff excellence awards
Eight UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff members were recognized for excellence during the university's opening meeting Aug. 21: Dr. Rose-Marie Avin, professor of economics, received the Excellence in Service Award. Dr. Analisa DeGrave, assistant professor of foreign languages, received the Excellence in Advising Award. LaNette Flunker, senior lecturer of management and marketing, received the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Jack Hoggatt, assistant dean for student affairs, professor and chair of the business communication department in the College of Business, is the UW-Eau Claire 2007 Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award nominee. Gretchen Hutterli, assistant dean for external affairs in the College of Business, received the Excellence in Performance Award for Administrative and Professional Academic Staff. Dr. J. Brian Mahoney, professor of geology, received the Excellence in Scholarship Award. Pamela Scheible, publications and scheduling specialist in Registration Services, received the Classified Staff Excellence in Performance Award. Dr. Vicki Snider, professor of special education, is UW-Eau Claire's nominee for the 2007 U.S. Professor of the Year Award sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Each honoree received a university medallion and $1,500 from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Full story.
Campus safety update: English faculty member starts student fund "After years of working with students inside and outside of the classroom, I have observed that the students who have had English related experiences outside of the classroom report that those experiences have had profound and meaningful impacts upon them," said Hochstein, adjunct assistant professor of English. Service-Learning, FYE offices move across river Freshmen move in, continue orientation this week
Following their move into the residence halls this Thursday, Aug. 30, UW-Eau Claire's 2,000 new freshmen will be welcomed to the university Friday, Aug. 31, as the new school year and phase two of their orientation begins. Phase two builds on information provided earlier this summer and is designed to answer many of the questions new students have. "As students prepare for classes many questions arise and a certain amount of nervousness is natural," said Jacqueline Bonneville, coordinator of new student orientation. "Phase two of orientation provides the answers to many questions and gives students the opportunity to meet faculty and other professionals on campus who can calm their fears and help them develop a level of confidence as they prepare for success at UW-Eau Claire." Kinesiology class takes stand in letter to editor Dalleck's class focuses on chronic diseases prevalent in today's society, including obesity. One of the topics covered is the concern of many public health officials over the publicity several individuals — including Campos, author of "The Obesity Myth" — have received for taking the stance that the obesity epidemic has been overblown. Shortly following the class discussion on this topic, a student brought in the column by Campos. "This prompted another discussion in our class concerning the numerous health consequences of obesity and the potential disservice to members of the Eau Claire community who would read the Campos editorial," he said. "After challenging the class that it was their professional responsibility to properly educate the public on the health risks of obesity and to also clarify misconceptions coming from inaccurate sources, we decided the best course of action was to respond to Campos in the form of a letter to the editor." Dalleck said he is proud of his students for their initiative in writing the 400-word letter, which was not a course requirement. The letter was published Aug. 19. UW-Eau Claire continues to review and revise its emergency response plans following the tragic events at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., this past spring. University police and safety officials, in conjunction with university administration, the city of Eau Claire, appropriate regional emergency response authorities and UW System administration, have engaged in an ongoing comprehensive evaluation of campus safety and emergency preparedness. In addition, University Police, in consultation with Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich, has reviewed and updated its use-of-force policy to authorize the use of the Taser electronic control device (ECD) on a probationary basis. 
Jeremy's Market, a mini farmer's market featuring fresh produce, flowers and other local specialties, returns to UW-Eau Claire this week. The market will be on campus from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays, Aug. 30 through Oct. 25, rain or shine, on the north sidewalk in front of Zorn Arena.
