Campus community invited to finalist presentations
Finalists for UW-Eau Claire's associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies position will be on campus in the coming weeks. They will present "The Role of Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Graduate Studies in a Comprehensive Liberal Arts Institution" during open forums in Davies Theatre. Members of the campus community are invited to attend.
The following finalists will be on campus this week:
• Kenneth Paap, associate vice president, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at San Francisco State University. Open forum: April 21, Davies Theatre, 10 a.m.
• Jeanne Clerc, associate provost for extended studies and distance learning at Western Illinois University at Macomb and Moline. Open forum: April 24, Davies Theatre, 10 a.m.

Student Research Day set for April 28 and 29
The
Office of Research and
Sponsored Programs is sponsoring the 16th annual Student Research
Day April 28 and 29. Student research posters will be on display from
noon to 5 p.m. April 28, and from 8 a.m. to noon April 29 in Zorn Arena.
Students will be with their posters from noon to 4 p.m. April 28. The
event will highlight student research accomplishments and the important
role faculty and academic staff play as mentors in the scholarly activity
process. The diverse nature of research being conducted on campus may
be viewed through the wide variety of poster exhibits included in this
year's Student Research Day — 240 projects in all. Members of
the university community are encouraged to view the exhibit and meet
undergraduate and graduate student researchers. More

Faculty, academic staff invited to ORSP reception April 28
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is hosting a reception honoring faculty and academic staff who received or applied for grants during the past year as well as the members of the committees that assist the office in promoting scholarly activities. The reception will be held April 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Chancellor Levin-Stankevich will be among those extending their appreciation at the reception. Student Research Day awards will be presented at the faculty/academic staff reception.

and those reaching career milestones
UW-Eau Claire's Service Recognition and Retirement Reception will be held Wednesday, May 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Employees who are approaching milestone years of service and those who are retiring will be recognized at 3:30 p.m. The event is open to all faculty and staff.

Continuing Education
Libby Thurston received a certificate of completion from the United Way of Greater Eau Claire for completing the Emerging Leaders Society Board of Directors Training Series. Graduates were recognized April 10 at the 2008 United Way Gold Awards Celebration. The Emerging Leader Nonprofit Board Training Series includes interactive sessions that help to better prepare young leaders to sit on a nonprofit board of directors. Full story. 
Foreign Languages
Manuel Fernández presented “Trauma, identidad y nación en música cubana del exilio: Los años setenta” at the VII Congreso Internacional de Literatura Hispánica March 3-6 in Cusco, Perú. 
Geography and Anthropology
Harry Jol was a co-author with Henrik Rother (University of Canterbury, New Zealand, now with ANSTO Australia) and Jamie Shulmeister (University of Canterbury, New Zealand) on a paper titled “Stratigraphy and Tectonic Implications of Late Pleistocene Valley Fill in the Hope Valley, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand.” The paper was published in Geological Society of America Special Publication No. 432, pages 155-168.
Sociology
Melissa Bonstead-Bruns attended the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting March 27-30 in St. Louis, Mo. She sponsored UW-Eau Claire students Amanda Albert and Emily Cooper, who presented a paper titled "Gender Differences in Family Expectations and Subsequent Career Decisions Among College Students." Jeff Erger also attended the meeting and sponsored UW-Eau Claire student Kyle Zander, who presented a paper titled "Solidarity in Student Organizations: How Monitoring, Sanctioning and Identity Influence Participation."
Tarique Niazi had articles titled "Water Resources" and "Toxic Waste" published iin the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, edited by William A. Darity Jr., Vol. 9, second edition, Detroit, Macmillan Reference, USA, 2008, pages 40-42 and 407-409, respectively. Niazi was invited to write the articles for the publication.
Births and Adoptions
Congratulations to Beth Ernst, foreign languages, and Monty Kozbial Ernst, McNair Program, on the birth of their son, Hugh Kozbial Ernst, on April 9.
