2007 English Festival begins today
The UW-Eau Claire English department will hold its annual English Festival today through May 4 at various locations across campus, including Davies Center and the Campus Mall. UW-Eau Claire's English Festival is one of the largest student-run language arts festivals in the nation, featuring guest authors, lectures by English faculty members, student panels, capstone presentations, an international poetry reading and live music each day on the campus mall. "Comma Sutra: Let Language Touch You" is the theme of this year's English Festival. Many of the presentations will explore issues of love, romance and sexuality in texts. The festival will kick off at 7 p.m. tonight with a reading of poetry and fiction by UW-Eau Claire writers Allyson Goldin Loomis and Jon Loomis in The Cabin in Davies Center. See related news release and the English Festival program. Princeton Review again names UW-Eau Claire among nation's best college values Given the tuition increases of recent years, it's important that people know UW-Eau Claire is still a best value among higher education institutions across the country, said Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. "UW-Eau Claire offers its students an exceptional education at a reasonable cost," said Levin-Stankevich. "We have extremely talented faculty and staff who are committed to making sure their students receive the best educational experience possible. As the cost to attend college continues to rise nationwide, a best value distinction is more important than ever." Full story. Two COEHS associate dean finalists

Battalio, Devine recognized for service May 7 reception to honor retiring employees ORSP announces Student Research Day winners
UW-Eau Claire students displayed 252 student and faculty collaborative research projects and independent student research projects at the 15th annual Student Research Day April 23-24. The event was sponsored by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs with support from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Senior biochemistry major Katie Klotz was the recipient of the Kell Container Corporation Scholarship. Klotz worked with faculty mentor Jason Halfen on a research project titled "Probing the Molecular Architecture of Iron-Based Catalysts for the Aziridination of Olefins." A seven-member faculty judging panel from Boston Architectural College, University of St. Thomas, University of Minnesota-Morris, Macalester College, Presbyterian College, Bradley University, Hope College, UW-River Falls and UW-Stout also selected several research projects for special recognition. The following students and faculty mentors received first-place honors in their categories (see other Student Research Day winners on the ORSP Web site):
David Jacobs receives Karl Andresen Scholarship
The UW-Eau Claire Foundation has awarded senior David Jacobs, Green Bay, the Karl Andresen Political Science Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year. The award was established by former students of Andresen, professor emeritus of political science, to recognize a graduating senior who has demonstrated academic excellence and the promise of future academic achievements. Jacobs will receive an award of $5,000, which he said will help pay for expenses at either Northwestern University School of Law or Harvard Law School. Full story. New poster added to diversity campaign A new poster has been released and can be seen, along with 14 previous posters, in numerous locations across campus. The posters feature photos of UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff, along with quotes from the individuals about what makes them diverse. The latest poster features Mona Majdalani, associate professor or curriculum and instruction. For more information about the diversity campaign, to make a suggestion or to receive a copy of a poster for your department or office, contact Kimberly Barrett, Student Development and Diversity, at 836-5992 or barretka@uwec.edu. 'Much Ado About Nothing' to open May 3 Written by Shakespeare around 1598, the comedy revolves around the characters of Beatrice and Benedict, two intelligent, articulate and funny characters who are as quick to attack each other with words as they are to fall in love with each other. The play, made popular by the film starring Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh, features trickery, disguises, misperceptions and a happy ending. Full story. Author Sam Weller to speak at final Big Read event
The final event of The Eau Claire Big Read will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, with "The Bradbury Chronicles: A Night with Sam Weller" in Room 100 of UW-Eau Claire's Schneider Social Science Hall. Weller, author of "The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury," will discuss his experiences with Bradbury and "Fahrenheit 451." Weller is a professor at Chicago's Columbia College and teaches the only college-level course in the United States on the life and work of Ray Bradbury. He will discuss the time he spent with Bradbury, how the biography came to be written, and the cultural relevance of "Fahrenheit 451." A question-and-answer period will follow the free presentation.
