Two finalists in the search for UW-Eau Claire's new provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs each will spend two days interviewing on campus this week. Each finalist will present a public forum titled "The Future of Public Higher Education," to which all UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff are invited. Each finalist also will hold office hours open to all univeristy faculty and staff.

Dr. Steven Tallant, interim provost and vice chancellor at UW-Eau Claire, will be interviewed today and Tuesday, March 6. His public forum will be today from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in Phillips Hall Room 007. His open office hours will be from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Schofield Hall Room 206A.

Michael Miller

Dr. Michael Miller, dean of the College of Education at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn., will be interviewed Wednesday and Thursday, March 7-8. His public forum will be March 7 from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in Phillips Hall Room 007. His open office hours will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Schofield Hall Room 206A.

Students create bowls for area fundraiser
UW-Eau Claire ceramics students are among area artists pitching in to help fight hunger in the Chippewa Valley. The students, under the direction of assistant professor Susan O'Brien, are donating 200 handmade ceramic bowls for the "Empty Bowls" fundraiser to be held March 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 E. Lexington Blvd., Eau Claire. The event proceeds will benefit Feed My People Food Bank.

Empty Bowls is a benefit serving soup, specialty breads and desserts for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and for dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for a meal and a hand-designed ceramic bowl, $8 for a meal alone, and $40 for a family pack of two bowls and a meal for up to five individuals. Children under age 10 eat free with a paying adult. Bowl numbers are limited; advance ticket purchase is recommended. Magician Adam Perry to perform March 9

Magician Adam Perry will bring his magic to UW-Eau Claire with a show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, in Schofield Auditorium. Perry is a master in pyro techniques, close-up magic, card manipulation, sleight of hand and escapology.

UW-Eau Claire student talent also will be on display. The show will open with a vocal performance by junior Kyle Robl, Merrill, who also will sing during the show's transitions.

The show is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Full story.

Alum Michael Perry to help kick off The Big Read
UW-Eau Claire nursing alumnus, published author and volunteer firefighter Michael Perry will be among the featured guests at the kickoff of The Big Read in Eau Claire at 11 a.m. March 10 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library.

The Big Read, funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their community. The Eau Claire Big Read's featured book is "Farenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.

The kickoff event will be the first of approximately eight weeks of readings, discussions, film screenings and other activities at various locations around Eau Claire. The kickoff will begin when a truck from the Eau Claire Fire Department will deliver 451 copies of Bradbury's classic novel to be given away free to Big Read participants.

UW-Eau Claire is one of the sponsors of the Eau Claire Big Read. Jasmine Krotzman, associate lecturer of English, and history alumnus Jeremy Gragert, an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer, wrote The Big Read grant in conjunction with UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning. Eau Claire was the only community in Wisconsin chosen to participate in The Big Read for spring 2007. Full story.

Artists Series presents 'Lost in Yonkers'
Neil Simon's "Lost in Yonkers" will be presented by the Montana Repertory Theatre Monday, March 12, at UW-Eau Claire. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play about two young brothers growing up during World War II will be performed as part of the Artists Series in Gantner Concert Hall of Haas Fine Arts Center.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center, and also will be sold at the door.

A dessert reception and discussion hosted by Dr. Blake Westerlund of the UW-Eau Claire department of English will precede the performance from 6-7 p.m. in the Foster Gallery. Tickets for the reception and discussion are $5 in advance or at the door. Full story.

Posters: Diversity is 'more than black and white'

An awareness campaign continues at UW-Eau Claire to bring attention to all types of diversity on campus.

Two new posters have been released and can be seen, along with the 12 initial posters, in numerous locations across campus. The posters feature photos of UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff, along with quotes from the individuals about what makes them diverse. The campaign addresses all types of diversity, including but not limited to race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, geographic diversity and people with mental or physical disabilities. The new posters feature David Jones, associate professor of English and women's studies; and Lisa Tetzlaff, a senior elementary education major. New posters will be added to the campaign in the coming months.

Friday Viennese Ball tickets still available
Friday-night tickets remain for the 33rd annual Viennese Ball, to be held April 13-14 at UW-Eau Claire. Tickets for Saturday night's event are sold out. The largest social event hosted annually by the university, the Viennese Ball is presented from 6:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. in Davies Center.

Window sales began Thursday, March 1, at the Service Center in Davies Center's East Lobby. The Service Center is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone at 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC. A printable ticket order form and information about dress and activities at the ball may be found on the Viennese Ball Web site.

Alumna shares Katrina recovery work experience

UW-Eau Claire alumna JoAnn Parks, right, who earned a bachelor's degree in geography in 1996, spoke Friday in Phillips Science Hall about her experiences providing GIS support to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of recovery efforts for Hurricane Katrina. Parks' employer, Applied Data Consultants, Inc., has provided GIS support personnel for 15 tours of duty as part of the Mississippi Task Force Hope through the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During her tour, Parks was the only GIS person supporting the recovery field offices on the coast. Working 12-hour days, seven days a week for a month straight, she provided GIS support for debris removal and cleanup efforts. See the The Spectator's coverage of Parks' presentation.
