Nominations sought for Excellence in Performance Award
The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee invites nominations for the annual Excellence in Performance Award to be given in fall 2007. The UW-Eau Claire Foundation will present $1,500 to the recipient. Any administrative and/or professional member of the academic staff with a 50 percent or greater appointment may be nominated for the award. And, any member of the faculty, academic or classified staffs, administration or student body is welcome to nominate someone.

The Administrative and/or Professional Academic Staff Awards Committee will review all nominations and forward a recommendation to Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. Nominees will be considered for three years.

Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will present Faculty/Academic Staff Forums this semester. The programs will be held from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesdays in the Presidents Room of Davies Center unless otherwise noted. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or tray.

Faculty/academic staff workshops and programs
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs announces the following program deadlines.

Program Deadlines:
        • The deadline for Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates Grants, University Research and Creative Activity and the Kell Container Corporation Scholarship for Faculty/Student Collaborative Research is Feb. 15.

Foreign Languages/Honors Program
Paul Hoff gave an invited presentation on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview at the Concordia Language Villages CLVisa Workshop Feb. 2-3 in Minneapolis. The workshop was designed to compare and align the CLVisa language assessment with components of several other assessment documents, including the NCSSFL LinguaFolio, the European Language Portfolio, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (speaking), and the ACTFL Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learners.

Geography and Anthropology
Harry Jol co-authored a paper titled "GPR Investigation of Hapuna Beach, Hawaii: Coastal and Fluvial Deposits" with UW-Eau Claire alumna Jenifer Bode (now a graduate student at the University of Calgary). The paper was presented at the 11th International Conference on Ground Penetrating Radar June 19-22 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and published in the conference proceedings on CD-ROM.

Social Work
Carol Langer was the guest editor for the spring 2007 special issue on spirituality of the social work journal Arête. She also co-authored the article "A Qualitative Study of Immigration Policy and Practice Dilemmas for Social Work Students," which was published in the Journal of Social Work Education, Vol. 43, No. 1, pages 133-146, 2007. Other co-authors were R. Furman, T.W. Sanchez and N.J. Negi.

Births and Adoptions
Congratulations to Michelle Menting, Records and Registration, and her husband, Jeff, on the birth of daughter Elizabeth Willa Rose on Feb. 4. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 inches long when she was born.
