Provost Satz returns to full-time position
Satz, who was diagnosed with a serious medical condition in November 2003, said his treatments have been successful, and he is glad to return to UW-Eau Claire on a full-time basis. "I would like to express my appreciation to Steve Tallant and to the entire Academic Affairs staff for their leadership in my absence," he added. Chancellor Mash also extended special appreciation to Steve Tallant, who served as interim provost and vice chancellor during Satz's absence. "Dr. Tallant's leadership has enabled our university to continue to progress," Mash said, noting that Tallant would also return to his position as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs on Monday. In this role, Tallant provides leadership for freshman experience programs and for honors, service-learning, international education, enrollment management, and records and registration, as well as programming for nontraditional students, retention issues and faculty personnel matters.
Andy Phillips, who was named interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies in May, will remain in that position and continue to provide leadership in many areas including information technology, continuing education, community and economic development outreach activities, new academic program development and assistance with faculty personnel matters. Chancellor Mash will discuss the transition with the University Senate Executive Committee Nov. 2. Students' election Web site goes live The students in the CJ 321 "Public Affairs Reporting" class recently published an elections preview Web site called VoteSmart. It features detailed print and audio stories on every candidate in every national, statewide, congressional and legislative race on the ballot in Eau Claire. "Unlike many other election Web sites, this is a balanced one that's written expressly for UW-Eau Claire students by UW-Eau Claire students," said Mike Dorsher, assistant professor of communication and journalism. "The site even includes print and audio profiles on the student reporters, so you can get an idea of the people behind the stories." The students will cover their candidates on election night and update the VoteSmart site with results and reactions from every race by 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. Two Young Israelis to speak at UW-Eau Claire about refusing military service in Israel
Two young Israeli refuseniks, Noam Bahat and Shimri Zamaret, will speak about their decision to refuse service in the Israel Defense Forces at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in Schofield Auditorium. Bahat and Zamaret are among a group of five students released this past September from an Israeli prison, where they spent nearly two years for refusing, after high school, to enlist in what Bahat refers to in his court testimony as an "army of oppression." The two are members of Shministim, a group of more than 300 high school seniors who have announced they "refuse to be soldiers for occupation." Their collective statements, the "High School Seniors' Letters" can be viewed online. Sponsors of the local event include the National Peace Foundation, the UW-Eau Claire Center for International Education and the UW-Eau Claire Geography Club. Bahat and Zamaret also will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Eau Claire. Full story. Milwaukee Repertory Theater to perform 'Cyrano' at UW-Eau Claire Nov. 4 A celebration of theatrical creativity and storytelling, "Cyrano" — presented by We Energies and directed by James Edmondson — reinvents the classic French story of Cyrano de Bergerac using only three actors and loads of imagination and panache. Cyrano de Bergerac has captivated audiences with his wit, poetry, chivalry and large nose since he first appeared on stage more than a hundred years ago. Considered the greatest work of Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), the epic tale was adapted into a sweeping 90-minute one-act play by Belgian theater artist Jo Roets. Full story and ticket information. Davies Center will once again be transformed into a miniature world with many nationalities and groups proudly displaying their cultures at UW-Eau Claire's International Folk Fair, to be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7. Folk Fair, which is coordinated by the Center for International Education at UW-Eau Claire, is the largest international festival of its kind in the area. Serving as a cultural exchange between exhibiters and visitors to the fair, it includes educational activities for children, live music, colorful cultural exhibits, dancing, art and craft displays, history, language, culture and a variety of ethnic food. Fair participants will be given "passports" to be stamped as they "travel" from country to country. For every seven countries visited, guests will receive a ticket for a prize drawing to be held at 4:15 p.m. in Davies Theatre. Prizes are donated by businesses in the Eau Claire community. Full story.
The sessions are slated for 5 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center on lower campus and 7:30 a.m. Nov. 10 in the Eagle Room of Davies Center. The goal of the sessions is to learn more about how UW-Eau Claire can support diversity on campus and in the Eau Claire community, and to learn how the community might partner with the campus in welcoming diverse students to the Eau Claire area.
