Faculty/academic staff workshops and programs
As a special service to faculty and academic staff, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is sponsoring a series of workshops to describe the various programs available to them. Program deadlines also are noted.

Workshops:
    A Research Workshop to discuss the Faculty Sabbatical Leave will be held Sept. 8 from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. as a brown bag lunch session in the Badger Room of Davies Center.

Research Workshop to discuss the following programs: Faculty/Student Research Collaboration, Student Travel for the Presentation of Research Results and Small Research Grants will be held Sept. 11 from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. as a brown bag lunch session in the Badger Room of Davies Center.

Program Deadlines:
    The Academic Staff Professional Development Program deadline for the first competition for submitting proposals is Sept. 1.
   
Faculty/Student Research Collaboration Grants deadline is Sept. 15.
    The
Faculty Sabbatical Leave Program deadline is Oct. 1.
    The Guest Lecturers, Artists and Other Professionals Program and the Workshops and Special Projects Travel Program deadline is the first working day of the month. Go to top of page

Biology
Rodolfo Buiser and Steven Majstorovic (Political Science) recently were awarded honorary memberships in the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society. They were recognized by the organization as individuals who have made notable contributions to society and whose influence extends beyond the university or college. Buiser and Majstorovic were nominated for the honor by members of the UW-Eau Claire chapter of Mortar Board. Go to top of page

Chemistry
Jim Phillips attended the Gordon Research Conference on the Chemistry and Physics of Matrix-Isolated Species July 20-25 in Lewiston, Maine. He gave two presentations at the meeting, including an invited "short talk" titled "What is the Structure of CH3CN–BF3 in Solid Argon?" and a poster titled "Structure and Bonding in the Nitrile Complexes of Boron Trifluoride: Matrix Isolation IR Spectroscopy, Crystallography and Computations." Computer Science
Paul Wagner was a member of a panel discussion titled "Experiences with Integrated Development Environments and Java Teaching: What Works and What Doesn’t” at the Eighth Annual Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education in June in Thessaloniki, Greece. Wagner also presented two position papers that he and Tom Moore developed. Go to top of page

English
Max Garland had been awarded the 2003 Arts and Letters Poetry Prize by the literary journal Arts and Letters for his poems "The Pigs Hold Up the Dawn" and "Goldfinches." Garland will receive $1000 and publication of the winning poems in Arts and Letters, and will be honored at an award ceremony and poetry reading at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga., in October. Joel Pace organized a panel titled "Race, Gender and Transatlantic Romanticism" and presented a paper titled "The Influence of Transnational Discourses of Race and Ethnicity on Romantic Gothic" for the joint conference of the transatlantic studies journal Symbiosis and the University of Edinburgh's Scottish Transatlantic Relations Project July 18-21 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Pace was a respondent to three papers on parenting and gender in Romantic literature for the Romanticism and Parenting Conference July 29-31 in New York City. He also organized two special sessions, chaired a panel and co-delivered a paper (on revising influence theory to account for transatlantic literary and cultural exchange in the nineteenth century) for the joint conference of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism and the British Association for Romantic Studies Aug. 1-5 at Fordham University in New York. Karen Welch presented a paper titled “Preparing Students for College English” at the annual conference of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English-Language Arts May 3 in Appleton. She also presented on a panel titled “Radical Transformations” at the annual Council of Writing Program Administrators national conference July 11 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Go to top of page

Music and Theatre Arts
David Knowlton will have his paintings displayed in an exhibit titled "Landscapes + Icons" Sept. 7 through Oct. 15 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire. Sculptures by UW-Eau Claire alumnus Bob Gehrke also will be part of the exhibit. An opening reception will be held Sept. 7 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the gallery on the library's second floor mezzanine.
