War
with Iraq: A Time for Campus Tolerance, Reflection and Discussion
For many months,
UW-Eau Claire faculty, students, staff and administrators have
been discussing, debating and thinking about the consequences
of the United States entering a war with Iraq. The speculation
has now turned to reality.
The UW-Eau Claire
community has a long and healthy tradition of debating sociopolitical
issues of great importance, and it’s more important than
ever that those conversations continue on our campus. I strongly
encourage such debate, believing true academic freedom includes
discussing and considering all points of view and providing
opportunities for all voices to be heard.
During this time
of war, all members of our campus community - regardless of
national origin, ethnicity and political or religious affiliations
- must be free to express their political and personal
views without fear of retribution.
But debates and free
expression must not keep others from studying, working and living
on our campus. Classes will continue, as will the many other
activities and events that make our campus a dynamic place to
learn and live.
As this
international conflict unfolds, we will keep in our thoughts
and in our hearts the thousands of men and women serving in
the military, including the nearly 50 UW-Eau Claire students
and faculty who have been called to active duty. We are united
in our hope that they all return to our campus safely and soon
and that their efforts will have contributed to what we all
want: a lasting world peace.
