Summer session concert to feature Billy McLaughlin
Acoustic guitar wizard Billy McLaughlin will present a free outdoor concert
Monday, July 23, at UW-Eau Claire.
The Summer Session
Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield
Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring
blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
"The way he plays, you may swear Billy McLaughlin is two
of the greatest acoustic guitarists you’ve ever heard," wrote the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
"Besides being a brilliant fingerpicker," wrote
Acoustic Guitar World magazine, "Billy McLaughlin stretches the sonic
possibilities of the acoustic guitar by employing unorthodox techniques that
bring inventive harmonic and rhythmic nuances to his New Age music."
Technically trained in the University of Southern California’s
guitar program, McLaughlin comes from a jazz-pop background and cut his teeth on
electric guitar. In April, Narada released his latest recording, "Acoustic
Original: The Best of Billy McLaughlin."
Also on campus during the week of July 23 are these free
Summer Session Programs:
- "A Little Princess," a 1995 adaptation of
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story of perseverance and faith, will screen
Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre. Sara Crewe (Leisel
Matthews) shares a life of wonder in exotic India with her devoted father. As
World War I begins and her father is drawn into active military service, the
imaginative girl is enrolled at a private boarding school run by a cruel
headmistress (Eleanor Bron). When word comes that Sara’s father has been
killed and his estate has been seized by the government, the girl is relegated
to a life of servitude at the school. Critic Roger Ebert called it a
"magical family film [with] a sense of wonder, and a message: The world is
a vast and challenging place, through which a child can find its way with pluck
and intelligence." Alfonso Cuaron’s 97-minute film is rated G.
- UW-Eau Claire and area musicians will present a jazz
concert from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The
Cabin of Davies Center). A variety of grilled lunch items will be sold.
Funded by UW-Eau Claire student segregated fees, Summer Session Programs
continue through Aug. 2. More information is available from the Activities and

Cray Academy begins 14th year
The Cray Academy will celebrate its 14th year this
summer with approximately 550 K-12 teachers from the region attending sessions
in math, science and technology. The academy will be held during the weeks of
July 23 and 30 at Chippewa Falls Middle School. In 1994, the National Science
Foundation identified the Cray Academy as a national model for K-12 teacher
professional development. Twelve other academies have developed across Wisconsin
— all modeled after the Cray Academy flagship.
UW-Eau Claire has been a key partner with the Cray Academy since its first
year in 1988. UW-Eau Claire faculty provide instructional leadership for the
program and ongoing professional development activities for teachers.
