Continuing Education/Communication Sciences and Disorders
Debra King, formerly a program manager in UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education and now dean of students at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College-Superior, and Thomas King (emeritus), communication sciences and disorders, presented “Settling Northwest Wisconsin: Excellent 19th Century Adventures of the Favell and King Families” March 19 at the Fairlawn Museum in Superior and April 6 at the Northwest Wisconsin Professional Educators’ Alpha Delta Kappa meeting in Solon Springs. The Kings read from many of the original writings of their pioneer, early-settler relatives and emphasized the centrality of language and literacy in preserving detailed, accurate history. Debra and Thomas also have been working with Wisconsin Historical Society archivists to find and preserve other items, writings, documents and photos from early Wisconsin history in the King family collection. Writings by Angela Haste Favell (Thomas’s great-grandmother) appear on the WHS Web site and have been included in the critical thinking portion of the Wisconsin grade 8-12 history curriculum. Favell and her husband, Thomas Favell, were among the original settlers of Solon Springs. After the Civil War they homesteaded the property where Debra and Thomas now live.
