Board of Regents appoints Kevin P. Reilly as next UW System president
Kevin P. Reilly, chancellor and former provost of UW Extension, has been appointed as the sixth president of the UW System.

The UW System Board of Regents approved the appointment July
29, following the recommendation of the Regents’ Selection Committee for the UW System President.

“Kevin Reilly is a strong and capable leader who will move this university forward through promising, yet challenging, times,” said Regent President Toby E. Marcovich.

Reilly has served four years as UW-Extension chancellor and four years as vice chancellor and provost. He previously was associate provost for academic programs and secretary of the university at the State University of New York System. Reilly earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his master's degree and doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire Commencement set for Aug. 7
Summer commencement exercises for 209 candidates for graduation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, in Zorn Arena at UW-Eau Claire. The ceremony is open to everyone, and tickets are not required.

A total of 178 undergraduate students will receive bachelor's degrees, including 73 from the College of Arts and Sciences, 48 from the College of Business and 57 from the College of Professional Studies. Bachelor's degree recipients from the College of Professional Studies will include 22 from the School of Education, 34 from the School of Human Sciences and Services, and one from the School of Nursing.

Thirty-one graduate students will receive master's degrees. The graduates include nine from the College of Arts and Sciences, including one specialist in education degree. Four students will receive master's degrees from the College of Business. Within the College of Professional Studies, 16 students will receive master's degrees from the School of Education and two from the School of Nursing. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association to present awards Aug. 7
The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association will present awards to the following alumni and friends of the university Aug. 7 at a special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with summer commencement:

Dr. Rita Kisting Sparks, UW-Eau Claire professor emerita of nursing systems, will receive the Honorary Alumnus Award, presented to a nonalumnus who has demonstrated great love of and service to
UW-Eau Claire. Kisting Sparks retired in 2002 after 35 years as a faculty member and administrator in the UW-Eau Claire School of Nursing.

Thomas Griffith will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation in a manner that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. Griffith, a 1980 UW-Eau Claire journalism graduate, is president of TDG Communications Inc., a Deadwood, S.D., advertising, marketing and public relations firm with clients nationwide.

Susan (Patterson) Perry-Lindle also will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award. Perry-Lindle, a 1971 UW-Eau Claire social work graduate, is retired from a 26-year career in the U.S. Army - a career that spanned the globe and during which she helped expand military service opportunities for women who followed her. She was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1994, when there were only 25 female colonels in the Military Intelligence Corps.

Carol Van Dam will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional or personal achievements or service to UW-Eau Claire. Van Dam is a 1981 broadcast journalism graduate of UW-Eau Claire. Since 1999, she has been a news anchor and reporter for National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. From 1996 to 1999, she covered a variety of topics as a freelance reporter for NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition."

Charles Grossklaus also will receive the President's Award. Grossklaus, a 1969 business administration graduate of UW-Eau Claire, has been a business leader and active volunteer in the Chippewa Valley for more than 30 years. He is the president of Eau Claire-based credit union RCU, a post he has held since 1984.

Two UW-Eau Claire professors announce retirement
Two UW-Eau Claire professors recently announced their retirement. Both have been awarded emeritus status.

    • J. Kenneth Davidson Sr., professor of sociology and coordinator of family studies, will retire in August after 28 years at UW-Eau Claire.
    • Dennis Knutson, associate professor of accounting and finance, certified public accountant and certified management consultant, retired in May, after more than 30 years of service to UW-Eau Claire.

Saturday psychology class to offer nontraditional students more flexibility
UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension will offer "Psychology 100" from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday mornings, Sept.11 through Dec. 11. The course, created specifically for working adults, will be held in Room 202 of the Human Sciences and Services Building on Water Street.

“I often hear comments from adults returning to school that indicate a real need for classes such as the Psych 100 course being offered this fall," said Bonnie Isaacson, a UW-Eau Claire adult opportunity adviser who works closely with nontraditional students. "Many adults are continuing to work part time or even full time while attending school, and many have families to juggle their schedules around."

Isaacson said the Saturday morning time slot offers working students with families more flexibility, as well as an opportunity to enroll in a course at UW-Eau Claire with other nontraditional students who have similar commitments and concerns. Full story.

Create a theme basket to benefit United Way

This year’s United Way campaign includes a fun opportunity for the university community to get creative and/or buy something creative, all while benefiting the United Way of Greater Eau Claire and its member agencies.

Interested? Just follow these simple steps:

    • As a department, office or unit, determine what type of theme basket you would like to create. (A few ideas include a movie time basket; a red, white and blue patriotic gift basket; and a gardening basket. Note: “Basket” is a catch-all word — you could use a bucket for a car wash theme or a large ceramic bowl for a popcorn theme.)
    • Ask members of the department, office or unit to donate items to create the theme basket.
    • Contact Barb Bowers, Human Resources, at bowersba@uwec.edu or 836-3871 to request raffle tickets and to let her know what theme basket your group is creating.
    • Display the basket in your area and sell raffle tickets to anyone and everyone. Tickets are one for $1 or six for $5.
    • Bring your basket to East Blugold in Davies Center Sept. 29 to be displayed along with the other baskets through Oct. 1, when the lucky winner of each basket will be announced.

UW-Eau Claire centralizes services at new Service Center location in Davies
UW-Eau Claire has centralized many essential services at the newly relocated Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center. Located at Davies Center 161, the Service Center is the central source of campus information and offers postal services, university ID cards, tickets and meal plan services. Full story.

Davies Center cleaning Aug. 9-13
Davies Center will conduct a deep summer cleaning Monday-Friday, Aug. 9-13, to get ready for the new academic year. Services and programs will continue as usual; but all meeting rooms (including Davies Theatre), all lounges and most dining areas will be unavailable so staff can work on various projects and do extensive cleaning. Students, faculty/staff and visitors can expect to see custodial staff, facilities workers, meeting room furniture and cleaning equipment moving through the building all week.

The building will be open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dining service will be available at Marketplace from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Service Center and University Printing Services will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and University Bookstore hours will be 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Davies Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday.
