logo for "The Big Lebowski"Summer Cinema. "The Big Lebowski." (U.S. 1998, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, 117 min., rated R.) Thugs break into the apartment of Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) in the errant belief that they are accosting another Jeff Lebowski, the Big Lebowski, an eccentric philanthropist. Instead, they threaten and soil the carpet of the lesser Lebowski, a genial deadbeat known as "The Dude." Seeking restitution, The Dude and his bowling buddies (John Goodman, Steve Buscemi) are swept up in a kidnap caper involving German nihilists, a porn king (Ben Gazarra) and an avant-garde painter (Julianne Moore).
