Peter PhippenMusic on the Mall. Featuring ethnic flutist Peter Phippen. A professional musician for the past 25 years, Phippen spent his early career days as a bass guitarist and recording artist. But in 1987 his first flute — a 25-cent bamboo whistle — found its way into his hands, and wooden flutes became his solo instrument of choice. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating. Central Campus Mall (rain site: Schofield Auditorium or The Cabin, Davies Center), 7 p.m. Go to top of page

"Fargo" logoSummer Cinema. "Fargo." (U.S. 1996, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, 98 min., rated R.) Poor Jerry Lundegaard. He's deep in debt. His wealthy father-in-law has no respect for him. He cheats customers at the car dealership where he works. And now he's hired a bumbling duo to kidnap his wife — a plan that goes horribly awry, leading to homicide. Enter Marge Gunderson, one of the most fabulous movie cops in film history. The very-pregnant Marge just goes about her everyday business, eating (in nearly every scene), talking to the people in the community, and examining bloody corpses as if no day is different from the next. Yet she has an innate cop sense she is very, very good at her job and determined to solve the case in her offhanded manner. Davies Theatre, noon and 7 p.m. Also July 15.

Concerts in the Park. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education and the Indianhead Arts & Education Center will sponsor a series of summer concerts at the Shell Lake Pavilion in Shell Lake. Tonight's concert, performed by the Jazz Combo Faculty begins at 6:30 p.m. More information is available online. return to top
