Students start first hands-on Spanish summer camp in Eau Claire
Some area children ages 5 to 10 are learning Spanish
this summer, thanks to the efforts of two Spanish education majors at
UW-Eau Claire. Mumm and Pignet earlier this year offered a voluntary Spanish class to second-graders at Meadowview Elementary School in Eau Claire. Private donor Mari Jo Janke, Publications, provided funding for the program through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
"There was so much interest that we taught
two sessions to 34 second-graders, who gave up their recess to learn
Spanish," Pignet said. "We decided to start up a summer program
and teach it in one-week sessions to involve more kids and raise public
awareness." Full

Dr. James M. Anderson, a 1963 UW-Eau Claire chemistry graduate and native of Eau Claire, made time to stop by UW-Eau Claire during a recent visit for his Memorial High School class reunion. A professor of pathology, macromolecular science and biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Anderson has been involved in biomaterials research for more than 30 years. His work has involved creating implants that contain medications that are released after the implant is placed in the body. He also has produced heart valves. He is the editor of the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research and has been involved in the development of international standards for biological evaluation of medical devices. In addition to his position at CWRU, Anderson is on the staff at Cleveland University Hospital and the Rainbow Children's Hospital. He received his Ph.D. at Oregon State University and his medical doctor degree from CWRU. Anderson received a UW-Eau Claire Alumni Distinguished
Service Award in 1980.
