UW-Eau Claire
The National Youth Sports Program at UW-Eau Claire is in its 23rd year of providing children ages 10-16 summer fun.

This year's camp began June 12 and will continue through July 18. The federally funded program provides 25 program days for more than 600 area youth at no cost.

The program, which is conducted by University Recreation, provides area youth, including those from low socioeconomic families, an opportunity to learn sports skills and receive information about drugs/alcohol, nutrition, careers and higher education.

It's not just a sports camp," said Lisa Mc Intyre, activities director of NYSP and women's gymnastics coach. "There's a strong educational component that has a positive influence on many of our participants."

The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Participants are transported to campus, where they eat breakfast before beginning the day's activities and have lunch before heading home in the afternoon. Each participant also receives a free physical and T-shirt.

"I see how NYSP has benefited so many kids and the community, as well," said Mc Intyre, who has been involved in the program for seven years. "This program is about putting kids on the right track for life -- it's about making a difference in their lives and having a positive impact on them."

In 1991 and 1998 UW-Eau Claire's NYSP project was selected as the number one program in the country out of 200 programs, and each year between 1993 and 2002 the program received a Meritorious Award.

Golf event to benefit Thomas Bergmann Scholarship
The UW-Eau Claire community and friends of the late Thomas Bergmann are invited to participate in a fun-filled golf outing Tuesday, July 8, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Pine Meadow Golf Course in Eau Claire.

The purpose of the event is to honor Bergmann, have fun, socialize and raise money for the Thomas Bergmann Human Resources Scholarship through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

The suggested donation is $45, which includes green fees, prizes, hors d'oeuvres and beverages. The event is a nine hole, four to five person team scramble, followed by refreshments and presentation of golf-related prizes.

Portion of Water Street accessible following road reconstruction
A section of Water Street, which has been closed since June 20, now is open to through traffic. The majority of reconstruction work from Second Avenue to between Third and Fourth Avenues has been completed, according to City Project Engineer Doug Derks.

"There's still some construction equipment in the area and some work to complete, but the road is open and totally accessible to university parking lots," he said.

The Water Street improvement project, from Second Avenue to Sixth Avenue, includes new sanitary sewer and services, water main and services, storm sewer, concrete curb and gutter, concrete paving, sidewalks and streetscape.

The project is on track and tentatively scheduled for completion Aug. 15, Derks said.

UW-Eau Claire's Upward Bound program receives five-year TRIO Grant

During the summer, Upward Bound students participate in a six-week residency program on the UW-Eau Claire campus. Students live in a residence hall, take challenging academic classes, and participate in a variety of field trips as well as cultural, social, athletic and career-related activities.

UW-Eau Claire's Upward Bound program, which helps low-income and/or first generation high school students from Eau Claire prepare for college educations, was refunded and selected as one of only five Wisconsin universities to receive a five-year award. The other 14 recipients were awarded four-year grants.

U.S. Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold recently announced that UW-Eau Claire's Upward Bound grant proposal to the U.S. Department of Education was funded for a five-year cycle. Funding for the base year, 2003-04, is $318,684.

Feingold and Kohl are longtime supporters of the Department of Education's TRIO program, which funds the grants and worked with the department on behalf of Wisconsin's Upward Bound programs to secure the federal funding.

Kimamo Wahome, director of Upward Bound at UW-Eau Claire, said the university's 13-year-old program serves young people who lack the background, network and financial resources to further their education after high school.

"These are kids who most people would think wouldn't have a chance at college," Wahome said. "Thanks to this program, they are getting the help they need." Full story.

Michael Jerling to present free Summer Session concert June 30
Singer-songwriter Michael Jerling will present a free outdoor concert on Monday, June 30, at UW-Eau Claire.

The Summer Session Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.

Illinois-born songwriter Michael Jerling became involved with music while he helped run The Cabin as a student at UW-Eau Claire. Settled now in Saratoga Springs in upstate New York, Jerling has been a noted artist on the club, college and festival circuits since 1975. He has been among the winners of the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and his involvement with the seminal Fast Folk Musical Magazine in New York City led to one of his songs being included on the album "Fast Folk: A Community of Singers & Songwriters" (Smithsonian Folkways 2002). His newest CD is "Little Movies" (2001).

Jerling's live shows are buoyed by his sharp sense of humor, and his smooth baritone voice is backed up with consummate skill by six-string and 12-string guitars, harmonica and mandolin. A keen student of the good and ghastly in American life, he weaves themes like a novelist. More free Summer Session programs on campus.

Retirement reception honoring Ann Lapp set for July 2
Provost Ron Satz and his staff cordially invite members of the campus community to a retirement reception for Ann Lapp, dean of students and director of Academic and Career Services. The reception is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Dulany Inn of Davies Center. University staff and students are invited to share conversation and enjoy light refreshments with Dean Lapp, who is retiring after 34 years of distinguished service at UW-Eau Claire.
