Communication and Journalism
Andris Straumanis and
Mike Dorsher were
quoted in the June 2 Leader-Telegram article, “Media changes worry
experts, local impact not expected,” about the implications of
the Federal Communications Commission's vote to allow broadcast station
owners to buy additional stations and share ownership of newspapers
in the same cities. In addition, Dorsher has been chosen as the UW-Eau
Claire representative on a Madison-based team of online teaching experts
for a project titled "Investigating the Pedagogical and Economical
Effectiveness of Sharable Content Objects, Using Standards, in Online
Instruction." 
Counseling Services
Richard Boyum’s article,
"Transferring from One College to Another — The Personal
Ins and Outs,” and his online video, "Hot Tips for Better
Mental Health," recently were added to the University
of Chicago Student Counseling Virtual Pamphlet Collection.
Katherine Schneider
was elected president of the Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public
Library May 5 at the group's annual meeting. Edward
Frederick (Communication and Journalism) is a new at-large member
of the board. Continuing officers include Harry
Harder (English, emeritus), past president; Paul
Vanderheiden (Accounting and Finance), treasurer; and Robert
Rose (McIntyre Library), at-large member.

Bob Nowlan gave a presentation titled
“Teaching ‘Cinematic Representations of Ireland and the
Irish’,” at the American Conference for Irish Studies June
4-7 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. Nowlan discussed
his UW-Eau Claire class, “Topics in Film, Video and Moving-Image
Culture: Cinematic Representations of Ireland and the Irish,”
and the UW-Eau Claire Irish Film Festival held in spring 2003, which
he directed. 
Mathematics
R. Michael Howe and UW-Eau Claire
alumna Jennifer M. Deitte had their paper, “Motivating Students
to Study Mathematics,” published in the April 2003 issue of Mathematics
Teacher, a journal of the National Association of Teachers of
Mathematics. The paper was the result of a student/faculty collaborative
research project.
Political
Science
Ali Abootalebi was a guest on "The
Todd Feinberg Show" on KFAR 660-AM June 7. Feinberg is a syndicated
radio talk-show host whose show reaches 40 stations nationwide.
Psychology/Women’s
Studies
Susan C. Turell was one of six presenters
at the "Women with CLOUT" conference June 6-8 at UW-Eau Claire.
The conference was coordinated by the American Association of University
Women-Wisconsin and UW-Eau Claire. Turell gave a presentation on her
research regarding women's retrospective observations about the development
of leadership skills and specifically focused on the development of
mentoring relationships. 
Social Work
Gloria Fennell and Susan
Turell (Psychology/Women's Studies) served on a proposal review
committee in June for the Department of Human Services-Eau Claire County.
The proposals reviewed concerned the development of a county-wide crisis
intervention center for mental health concerns. 
Condolences
Condolences to Ansel Brooks, Publications, whose mother, Cynthia Roth,
died June 14 in St. Louis, Mo.
