Communication and Journalism
David Gordon (emeritus) organized
and participated in a panel discussion honoring John Merrill at the
Ethics Across the Professions conference March 19-21 at the University
of South Florida-St. Petersburg. Merrill, professor emeritus at the
University of Missouri, was a leader in establishing journalism media
ethics as an academic subject. The panel included seven of Merrill's
co-authors and focused on his half-century of scholarly leadership in
ethics, philosophy and international media.
Judy Sims' manuscript,
"The Interplay of Politicians and Media Owners in Greek Radio:
Pluralism as Diaplokì," was accepted for publication in
the winter 2003 issue of the Journal of Radio Studies. Sims' manuscript,
"Pluralism as Diaplokì: The Interplay of Politicians and
Media Owners in Greek Radio Broadcasting," has been published online
at "www.media.net.gr,
The complete source for Greek radio and television." The manuscripts
are based on research conducted during Sims' spring 2001 sabbatical.
Mathematics
Beth Kilday presented a workshop titled
"Hands-On Workshop Investigating Integrated Mathematics/Science/CBL/TI-83+
Activities for Middle School" at the Mathematics Education for
Elementary Teachers annual conference March 8 at UW-Waukesha. She also
presented a workshop titled "Examining Linearity Using the Light,
Voltage and Temperature Probes with the TI-73 and CBL2" at the
Wisconsin Mathematics Council's annual conference May 2 in Green Lake.
McIntyre Library
Betsy Richmond chaired the Metadata
Group of the American Library Association Government Documents Round
Table and co-authored a report
titled “Digitization of Government Information.” 
McNair Program
Monty Kozbial Ernst presented a paper
titled "Form as Illusion and Mirage: Dreiser from Sister Carrie
to An American Tragedy" at the American Literature Association
annual conference May 22-25 in Cambridge, Mass. 
Music and
Theatre Arts
Alexandre Dossin recently performed
several concerts in Brazil. He performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto
No. 5 with the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra May 27, which was broadcast
live for radio and TV. Dossin led a piano master class for graduate
and undergraduate piano students at the Federal University of Rio Grande
do Sul and in Porto Alegre May 28. He also performed solo recitals at
the conservatory of music in Pelotas May 29 and in Santa Maria May 30.
Kristine Fletcher
and UW-Eau Claire students/members of the Cane Mutiny Bassoon Ensemble
Kelli Hanson, Stacy Kern, Beth Anne Scherer and Amy Van Maldegiam performed
a collaborative concert with University of Iowa School of Music bassoonists
March 31 at the University of Iowa. Cane Mutiny then hosted the UI bassoonists
in a reciprocal concert April 22 at UW-Eau Claire. Cane Mutiny also
performed a concert for music students at Eau Claire's Memorial High
School May 12.

Science
Ali Abootalebi was a guest on the
National Public Radio show, “Talk of the Nation,” June 3.
He discussed the Arab states' economies and the role the United States
can play in light of events in Iraq.
Sociology
Jianjun Ji presented a paper titled
"Intergenerational Effect on Marital Quality" at the 2003
annual meeting of the Population Association of America May 1-3 in Minneapolis,
Minn.
Condolences
Condolences to John Bachmeier, Alumni Relations, whose brother, Patrick
Bachmeier, died June 14 in Colfax.
