EAU CLAIRE University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire athletes will conduct a Relay for Peace in an effort to raise money for the victims of
the terrorist attacks on the United States last week.
All 20 UW-Eau Claire athletic teams will be involved
in the 24-hour Relay for Peace which begins at 6 p.m. Friday on the Simpson
Field track behind the McPhee Physical Education Center on campus.
Among those participating in the opening ceremonies
will be Blugold Director of Athletics Marilyn Skrivseth as well as Eau Claire
Fire Chief Bruce Fuerbringer. UW-Eau
Claire Chancellor Donald Mash will also be running during the 24-hour event
although he will be out of town at the start of the event.
The event is a fund-raiser for the United Way
September 11th Fund. The
United Way and The New York Community Trust created the fund to help respond to
the immediate and longer-term needs of the victims, their families and the
communities affected by the terrorist acts of September 11. Launched with a $1 million donation from Williams Gas Pipeline, the Fund
has received support from dozens of Fortune 500 companies and thousands of
individuals already.
Blugold athletes and coaches expect to have at least
$1,000 in hand before the run actually begins on Friday through their contacts
with family, friends and boosters. A
tent will be set up at the entrance to the track where individuals can bring
their donations with checks made payable to the United Way September 11th
Fund. University and community individuals and organizations are welcome
to run or walk with the athletes for one lap, 10 laps or any length, according
to women’s cross country coach Tracy Yengo, who initiated the event. With the event covering 24 hours, everybody who wants to participate
should have an opportunity.
Blugold athletes will use a flag as a baton and
expect to keep it going for the entire 24 hours as most teams will take one-hour
blocks of time during the relay.
Chuck Knower, who runs CK Productions, a disc jockey
service, has volunteered his time and services and will provide appropriate
patriotic music throughout the 24-hour period.
Lincoln Contracts Supply Inc./Fabco Rents has donated
lights so that the track can be lit throughout the night.
Parking will be available in the McPhee Phy Ed Center lot and Chippewa
Valley Technical College has offered its lots across University Drive from
McPhee and also across Clairemont Avenue from Simpson Field.
