Dear
International Students:
By now, I’m sure
that you have heard about the massive explosions in New York and Washington DC.
These events have created a great sense of shock, anger, and sadness among the
citizens of the United States--it will likely take a great deal of time to fully
understand all of the implications of this event. At present, it is believed
(but not confirmed) that the attack was orchestrated by an overseas
organization.
After events
like these take place, you may find that some small-minded people might develop
an irrational fear of “foreigners”. It is not fair, but simply because
you are “foreigners” in the United States, some people may regard you
suspiciously.
I do NOT want to
frighten you, but I want all international students to be cautious in the coming
weeks. I sincerely believe that Eau Claire is a quiet and peaceful city; but,
during a situation like this, it is much better to be careful. Please do not go
out to the bars at night right now. When you are in public, please stay with
friends or your host families/friends. If someone is confrontational and engages
you in discussion about these events, it is best to excuse yourself and remove
yourself from the situation.
My hope and
belief is that you will NOT encounter trouble, but if you have ANY concerns at
all, contact: The Center for International Education (836-4411), the Dean of
Students Office (836-5626), the University Police (836-2222), or the Eau Claire
Police Department (911) if you have an emergency. You may also want to contact
your family members at home, so that they know you are safe.
