EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Nick Erickson, Platteville, has been awarded the 17th Ann Devroy Memorial Fellowship, presented annually to a UW-Eau Claire journalism student who shows exceptional promise and ability.
The fellowship includes a three-week residency at The Washington Post, a $2,500 scholarship to offset the costs of the residency and a paid summer internship at a Wisconsin newspaper. Erickson will work at The Post during his winter break in January 2015.
Erickson said he is excited, honored and thankful to have been named a Devroy Fellow.
"I truly have put in a lot of hard work in the name of journalism, and it was very flattering to have my efforts recognized by the people who have mentored me," Erickson said.
Erickson's other influential mentors include his parents, Mary and Paul Erickson, who also were journalism majors at UW-Eau Claire. They both graduated in 1986.
"All my life, I've seen firsthand how they've shaped people's lives through reporting, hard work and passion, and they've definitely shaped me to be the person I am today," Erickson said. "I couldn't be more happy and proud to be their son, and following in their footsteps is almost a dream come true."
Erickson said that his ultimate goal is to direct media relations for a professional sports franchise or a major university. By doing so, he said, he will be able to not only influence people through writing, but also feel a part of something bigger than himself.
Erickson was awarded the fellowship at the Ann Devroy Memorial Forum April 17. The forum featured Scott Wilson, White House bureau chief for The Washington Post.
Devroy, a 1970 graduate of UW-Eau Claire, was a White House correspondent for many years. She joined The Post staff in 1985 and died of cancer in 1997. Family members, friends, and colleagues honored her by establishing a fellowship and forum in her name at UW-Eau Claire through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
