SUBJECT: Chancellor Schmidt statement regarding governor's proposed tuition freeze

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt has issued this statement following the announcement today of Gov. Scott Walker's proposed additional two-year tuition freeze for the UW System:

"College affordability is an important issue, and UW-Eau Claire takes very seriously its responsibility to provide our students with a high-quality education at a reasonable cost.

"We have been very successful in doing so, as reflected by our many "best value" rankings.

"Since joining UW-Eau Claire, I have been engaging our finance staff to make our budget more understandable and transparent. Responsible fiscal management is essential, and we will continue working with the UW System president, administration and Board of Regents to ensure student tuition and Wisconsin taxpayers' dollars are used wisely."
