Registration open for April 25-26 Relay for Life eventMarch 24, 2014
EAU CLAIRE — Registration is underway for teams wishing to participate in an American Cancer Society Relay for Life event from 7 p.m. April 25 to 7 a.m. April 26 at the McPhee Physical Education Center's Ade Olson track at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The event will be hosted by UW-Eau Claire's Colleges Against Cancer student organization.
A cancer survivor will speak at the event kickoff ceremony at 7 p.m. April 25, with the relay to follow at 7:30 p.m. The night's activities also will include entertainment, games, performers, prizes and speakers.
Relay for Life is a commemoration of those who have fallen victim to cancer, those who currently battle it and those who have overcome it. During the community event, teams of eight to 15 people will take turns running or walking around the track throughout the night to raise money to support cancer research, education and patient services through the American Cancer Society.
Last year's event at UW-Eau Claire drew 300 participants and raised more than $32,000, and the 2014 goals are to reach more than 500 participants and break the $40,000 threshold, said Simoné Müller, Colleges Against Cancer president at UW-Eau Claire. Each participant who raises $100 will receive a free T-shirt, and those who raise $175 will get all-night access to the event's VIP room with free food and drinks from local businesses.
Participants who know a cancer survivor may honor that individual at this year's event. Survivors whose contact information is provided will be invited to the relay. Survivors who attend will be given a free T-shirt and a catered meal and will be recognized at the event.
