EAU CLAIRE — Luke Kempen has been named interim director of the Small Business Development Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His appointment follows the promotion of previous director Jim Mishefske, who was named statewide director of the Wisconsin SBDC Network in Madison Dec. 1.

Kempen joined UW-Eau Claire's SBDC June 1 as a small-business counselor. His previous experience includes working in the audit division of a large international public accounting firm in Milwaukee and in senior leadership positions at several private companies in Eau Claire. He also was a business owner who started a company, built it for five years and then sold it for a profit.

UW-Eau Claire's SBDC is part of a statewide network of SBDCs working with business owners and entrepreneurs to facilitate business growth and improvement and to launch successful new companies in Wisconsin. Through confidential no-cost consulting, low-cost entrepreneurial education and strategic facilitation, Kempen and other SBDC experts serve as resources for small and emerging midsize companies.

The SBDC's services include business planning assistance, including the preparation and analysis of financial statements, along with guidance on business startups and expansions, management and operational assessments, and exit planning.

Kempen possesses extensive business experience in the areas of finance and accounting, leadership, strategic planning, project management and human resources, said Dr. Durwin Long, director of UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education.

"Luke Kempen has already made a significant impact on local entrepreneurs through his work as the lead business counselor for UW-Eau Claire's Small Business Development Center," Long said. "His in-depth knowledge of the needs of small businesses makes him an excellent leader for the local SBDC."

Kempen received his bachelor's degree in accounting from UW-Eau Claire in 1988. He also is a graduate of the Executive Leadership Development Program at UW-Madison and is a certified public accountant. He currently is pursuing an MBA degree at UW-Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire's SBDC is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration and serves small businesses in Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Rusk and Taylor counties in west-central Wisconsin. The services of the local SBDC are offered through UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, located at 210 Water St., Eau Claire.
