EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Women's and LGBTQ Resource Center will host a variety of events for Trans*Mission Week, Nov. 11-14. All events are free and open to the public.

According to Christopher Jorgenson, Women's and LGBTQ Resource Center director, "trans*" is a term used to refer to the range and diversity of gender variance. "Transgender" and "trans*" are all-encompassing terms that refer to a broad spectrum of identities and expressions.

The purpose of Trans*Mission Week is to provide opportunities for attendees to learn more about and celebrate the trans* community — arguably the least understood identity in the LGBTQ spectrum.

"This series of events and presenters offers firsthand access to those whose lived experiences challenge the oft-confining notions of sexuality and gender identity/expression," Jorgenson said.

The events are as follows:

  • Nov. 11 — The Athens Boys Choir, consisting of solo member Harvey Katz, will perform at 7 p.m. in the Woodland Theater of Davies Center. Katz is a nationally acclaimed spoken-word artist based in Athens, Ga. He has had significant experience engaging college campuses with his entertaining, visceral and out-of-the-box exploration of what it means to be trans* in contemporary culture.

  • Nov. 12 — A screening of "Soldier's Girl" will be held at 7 p.m. in the Woodland Theater of Davies Center. Free popcorn, soda and candy will be provided. The 2003 drama offers a glimpse into the life and history of well-known trans* activist Calpernia Addams. The film is based on the true story of Addams' relationship with Barry Winchell, a private in the U.S. Army, and the tragic events that led to Winchell's death.

  • Nov. 13 — UW-Eau Claire alumna Jessica Janiuk will present "Recipe for a Vagina," at 7 p.m. in Room 330C of Davies Center. Janiuk will share her experience coming out as trans* (and her subsequent transition) while she was a student at UW-Eau Claire.

  • Nov. 14 — Christopher Jorgenson will present "Reading Between the Lines: The Difference Between Sex and Gender & Why it Matters" at 6 p.m. in the Menominee Room of Davies Center. The presentation will explore the confusion between sex and gender and how an understanding of each impacts our lives and sociocultural experiences.

"In my experience as director of the Women's and LGBTQ Resource Center, providing a space for people to share their lived experiences with others has, by far, the greatest potential for impacting the lives of those in attendance," Jorgenson said. "Trans* Mission Week will do just that."
