November 4, 2013

AmIndianHeritageEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites the campus and area community to celebrate American Indian Heritage Month.

The events are as follows:

  • Nov. 5 — The "Gikinoo'wizhiwe Onji Waaban" (Guiding for Tomorrow) will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Menominee Room of Davies Center. This initiative is a unique approach to increasing awareness of how climate change is affecting Lake Superior's coastal environment, people, cultures and economies. The Native American Student Association also will host an opening reception for the month's activities from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Ojibwe Room of Davies Center. Chili and frybread will be available.
  • Nov. 7 — The Native American Student Association will sell frybread Indian tacos from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on the first floor of Davies Center. Food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Nov. 11 — A Lac Courte Oreilles Veterans Day pow-wow bus trip will be held from 3-11 p.m. The group will depart from Kjer Theatre and will visit the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation. A $5 fee covers the cost of transportation, a feast and admission. Space is limited to 45 people, so those interested should contact the American Indian Studies office at 715-836-6045 or the Office of Multicultural Affairs at 715-836-3368.
  • Nov. 14 — A Native American student panel will be held from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Menominee Room of Davies Center. The subject of the panel is "Everything you ever wanted to ask an Indian but never could?" Participants may ask questions anonymously and hear back from students of the Native American Student Association.
  • Nov. 20 — The film "Babakiueria" will be shown from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Woodland Theater of Davies Center. The movie explores what it would feel like if a fleet tried to settle an area inhabited by white natives.
  • Nov. 21 — A Native American buffet will be held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Dulany Inn of Davies Center. The menu will include buffalo, venison, corn, wild rice and more. The price of the buffet is $9.50. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 715-836-3261.
