TO: News Editors and Directors
FROM: Julie Poquette, News Bureau Director
DATE: Aug. 19, 2013
SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire opening meeting set for Aug. 20
Members of the news media are welcome to cover the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire academic year opening meeting at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 20 in the Ojibwe Ballroom of Davies Center. The all-employee Blugold Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., and the opening meeting will begin following the breakfast.
The opening meeting will include a state-of-the-university address by Chancellor James Schmidt. Schmidt will discuss how UW-Eau Claire's mission and commitment to excellence will continue to guide its work to provide students with a transformative education. He will reflect on the importance of interdependence among university employees, departments and programs across campus; students; and the community — at the local, regional and state levels and beyond — to the university's immediate and long-term future.
Attending the opening meeting will be members of the extended family of James and Anne Ramsey, whose $1.5 million estate gift recently was received by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Anne Ramsey died in 2009, and James Ramsey passed away in April 2012. The gift will fund the first permanently endowed faculty chair in UW-Eau Claire's College of Arts and Sciences, the Oliver M. Ramsey Endowed Chair. The senior faculty position in biomedical science is part of UW-Eau Claire's collaborative focus on health care careers and education.
Schmidt will recognize Ramsey family members in attendance to honor James and Anne Ramsey, as well as James' brother and 1933 UW-Eau Claire alumnus Oliver Marion Ramsey. James and Oliver Marion Ramsey both were natives of rural Fairchild.
The academic year opening meeting also will include the presentation of faculty and staff excellence awards, as well as remarks by Mitchell Freymiller, University Senate chair; Greg Falkenberg, Classified Staff Council chair; and Bryan Larson, Student Senate president.
