McIntyre Library joins libraries nationwide to assess student learning

 EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been selected to participate in a national program designed to assess the impact of academic libraries on student learning and success. The Assessment in Action program is sponsored by the Association of College and Research Libraries and is designed to:

  1. Develop the professional competencies of librarians to document and communicate the value of their academic libraries primarily in relation to their institution's goals for student learning and success.

  2. Build and strengthen collaborative relationships with higher education stakeholders around the issue of library value.

  3. Contribute to higher education assessment work by creating approaches, strategies and practices that document the contribution of academic libraries to the overall goals and missions of their institutions.

Beginning in June, UW-Eau Claire's McIntyre Library will collaborate with the university's Office of Assessment and the English department's Composition Program to assess information literacy gains among students enrolled in the Blugold Seminar in Critical Reading and Writing. Each semester, librarians from the library's research and instruction department meet with students in the Blugold Seminar to discuss research strategies and help them build skills to search for and evaluate information. UW-Eau Claire's Assessment in Action project will demonstrate the value of integrating research skills into composition instruction.

UW-Eau Claire's Assessment in Action team leader is Robin Miller, assistant professor and research and instruction librarian. Team members include Dr. Jennifer Fager, director of assessment; Dr. Shevaun Watson, associate professor of English and Composition Program director; and other library faculty.

Through a competitive application process, UW-Eau Claire was among 75 colleges and universities in North America to be selected to participate in the 14-month program. Three other Wisconsin institutions also were selected to participate: UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee and Alverno College.

The Assessment in Action program is sponsored by the Association of College and Research Libraries in partnership with the Association for Institutional Research and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
