EAU CLAIRE — A release party celebrating the completion of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire art students' designs for the city of Eau Claire's three new hybrid buses will be held at 3 p.m. April 6 in the university's Human Sciences and Services parking lot on Water Street.

"Our team of students and faculty from UW-Eau Claire plus Eau Claire Transit are planning a celebratory launching of the city's new hybrid bus fleet," said Jyl Kelly, an assistant professor in UW-Eau Claire's department of art & design and one of the organizers of the release party. "It is customary for ship builders to celebrate a new ship launching by breaking a bottle filled with champagne or wine over the new ship. In this case we might use a bit of water from our own watershed to launch the new hybrid bus fleet."

The event will celebrate the exterior bus designs with local themes of earth, air and water — three essential elements in a watershed, Kelley said.

UW-Eau Claire seniors Alison Wheeler, Viroqua; Jennifer Johns, St. Louis Park, Minn.; and Luke Benson, Eau Claire, were selected last August to work on the hybrid bus art project after being selected from a pool of 30 student applicants. Read a related news release about the project.

The public is invited to the event, where attendees can view the newly decorated buses. The student designers, along with Dr. Michael Wick, UW-Eau Claire associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, and Mike Branco, transit manager for the city of Eau Claire, will speak at the event to celebrate this collaborative campus/community project. Free food will be served.
