Eau Claire Hmong Heritage Month was established in 2012 by UW-Eau Claire student Mai Neng Vang, a senior psychology major form Eau Claire, with support from the university's Dean of Students Office. A committee of students and staff members from across campus (including Housing and Residence Life, Affirmative Action, Admissions and the Office of Multicultural Affairs) coordinates events for Hmong Heritage Month.

The Hmong Heritage Month website includes the following mission statement: "The Eau Claire Hmong Heritage Month (HHM) was established to promote an appreciation for and education of the complexities of Hmong culture and history among members of the UW-Eau Claire campus and the Eau Claire community. The events are meant to be impactful and informative experiences for university students, staff/faculty, and community members; it is the hope of the committee that HHM will inspire conversations about current issues in the Hmong community as well as foster critical thinking about the challenges that the Hmong community continues to face in America."
