EAU CLAIRE — Ruth Marcus, a columnist, reporter, editor and editorial writer at The Washington Post, will be the featured speaker at the 2013 Ann Devroy Memorial Forum, which will begin at 7 p.m. April 25 in Schofield Auditorium at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Marcus joined The Washington Post as a staff writer in 1984, covering many topics including the Justice Department, the Supreme Court, the White House, Congress and national politics. She became a member of The Washington Post editorial board in 2003 after serving as a deputy national editor, and her occasional op-ed columns developed into a weekly column in 2005. Marcus was a nominated finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2007 after only a year as a full-time columnist.

"We are pleased that Ruth Marcus has agreed to be this year's forum speaker," said Jan Larson, associate professor of journalism at UW-Eau Claire and chair of this year's Devroy Forum Committee. "Given the recent presidential election, her insights as a political columnist likely will be of particular interest. Marcus is known for her even-handed approach to covering the political arena. She reports first and develops reasoned and researched opinions that she shares with readers in her columns."

Larson also commented on Marcus' personal relationship with Ann Devroy saying, "She (Marcus) knew Ann Devroy well and may be able to provide insights on how Ann would have approached covering the last election."

The Ann Devroy Memorial Forum and the Devroy Memorial Fund are presented in memory of 1970 UW-Eau Claire alumna Ann Devroy, whose ambition and talent led her through an extraordinary career in journalism before her death in 1997 at age 49. For the complete history of Devroy and the memorial forum created in her name, visit the forum website.

As an additional highlight of the forum, one journalism student who shows exceptional promise is selected to receive the Devroy Scholarship. This includes a three-week residency at The Washington Post and a paid summer internship at one of Wisconsin's three largest newspapers. The Devroy Fellow will be announced during the Forum presentation.

The Ann Devroy Memorial Forum is sponsored by The Washington Post Co., UW-Eau Claire's department of communication and journalism, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram. The event is free and open to the public.
