EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a faculty and guest artist recital at 2 p.m. March 10 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The recital will feature compositions by Dr. Chiayu Hsu, UW-Eau Claire lecturer of music.

A number of Hsu's pieces, including "Chasing Shadows," "Whispers of Heavenly Death," "Twelve Signs" and "Dinkey Bird" will be performed by faculty members Dr. Tim Lane, professor of music, flute; Grant Larson, lecturer of music, saxophone; Dr. Aurélien Pétillot, lecturer of music, viola; Kenneth Pereira, assistant professor of music, bass voice; and Dr. Nicholas Phillips, assistant professor of music, piano. Guest pianist Dr. Szu-Ling Wu also will perform.

Hsu is an active composer of contemporary works. Born in Banciao, Taiwan, she received her bachelor of music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, her master's degree and artist diploma from the Yale School of Music and her doctorate from Duke University. Hsu's combination of Chinese elements and Western techniques are a hallmark of her music.

Hsu, a UW-Eau Claire music faculty member since fall 2011, has received numerous awards and honors for her compositions, including a 2005 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer's Award and first prize in the National Taiwan Academy of Art Composition Competition.
