UW-Eau Claire planetarium resumes public shows Feb. 2

January 31, 2013

moon_starsEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's L.E. Phillips Planetarium will resume its public shows Feb. 2 and will offer presentations throughout the 2013 spring semester.

Public shows at the planetarium begin at 7 p.m. Tuesdays for adults and children 12 and older. Shows for children ages 4-12 are presented at 11 a.m. Saturdays. Group shows and school field trips can be arranged for groups of 50 or fewer people.

Each show includes a presentation on a specific topic, which changes monthly. The programs, which run for one hour, generally include a multimedia presentation.

The planetarium provides opportunities for visitors to learn about space, the solar system and stars in the night sky. Presenters will discuss sky motions, help visitors learn to identify constellations and answer questions about astronomy.

According to Dr. Lauren Likkel, planetarium director and UW-Eau Claire professor of physics and astronomy, "The planetarium provides a valuable opportunity for people to learn more about astronomy, a field that appeals to all ages. The university is pleased to be able to share this facility with the community."

The shows scheduled for February are "Constellations, Myths and Legends" on Tuesdays and "Lifestyles of the Stars" on Saturdays.

The shows planned for March are "Ancient Horizons: Astronomy in Egypt" on Tuesdays and "Solar System Adventure" on Saturdays.

Public shows will run through May 11, but will not be presented during spring break, March 16-23, or on April 20.

Admission is $2 per person at the door. Visitors should arrive 10 minutes before shows begin.

The planetarium is located in L.E. Phillips Science Hall on UW-Eau Claire's lower campus. Free parking is available during evenings and weekends.

More information about the planetarium is available online or by calling 715-836-3148.
