Media Memo: UW System Regents/Confluence ProjectJanuary 28, 2013
TO: News Editors and Directors
FROM: Mike Rindo, assistant chancellor for facilities and university relations
DATE: Jan. 28, 2013
SUBJECT: UW System Regents/Confluence Project
As the Feb. 7-8 meeting of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approaches, it is anticipated there will be media questions about whether the regents will consider additional action regarding the Confluence Project.
This memo is to clarify both the current status and next steps in the regents' consideration of the project.
At the October 2012 regents meeting at UW-Stout in Menomonie, both the Capital Planning and Budget Committee and the full Board of Regents unanimously approved a resolution supporting "the concept of the public-private partnership known as the Confluence Project." Read the full resolution.
Since the regents passed the resolution of support in October, UW-Eau Claire has been working with Haymarket Concepts LLC, the Eau Claire Regional Arts Council, the city of Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, UW System administration and others to further define the governance structure and funding sources for construction and operation of the community arts center portion of the Confluence Project.
Because UW-Eau Claire is not seeking funding in the 2013-15 biennial budget, no additional regent action is necessary until the Confluence Project is developed sufficiently for the regents to consider approval of an operation lease for the university's space within the community arts center and also the residence hall.
Media will be notified in advance of future Board of Regents consideration of the Confluence Project.
