UW-Eau Claire Black History Month events to begin Feb. 1

January 22, 2013

Eau Claire — A variety of events in recognition of Black History Month will be held throughout February and into March at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

A Black History Month Reception Feb. 1 will kick off the commemoration. It will run from 3-5 p.m. in the Dakota Ballroom of Davies Center. Attendees will enjoy company, conversation and food with students, faculty and staff who are dedicated to the promotion of African-American culture. This year's reception will focus on black modern artists such as the late Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Additional events are as follows:

  • Feb. 4 — Student panel: "Why did I Come to UW-Eau Claire?" noon-1 p.m., Ho-Chunk Room, Davies Center. A panel of students will discuss the reasons why they decided to come to UW-Eau Claire, how they feel about the campus climate and what they love about the university.
  • Feb. 12 — Student/faculty panel: "How to be Successful," noon-1 p.m., Ho-Chunk Room, Davies Center. A panel of students and faculty members will discuss ways in which students can be more successful in the classroom and will suggest helpful tools and resources.
  • Feb. 18 — Student panel: "Multicultural Student Perceptions," noon-1 p.m., Menominee Room, Davies Center. Students will discuss how classroom environments at UW-Eau Claire have affected how they learn and how they are heard within class discussions.
  • Feb. 26 — Student/faculty panel: "Creating an Inclusive Classroom," noon-1 p.m., Ho-Chunk Room, Davies Center. A group of students and faculty members will discuss how to better incorporate the voices of students who are rarely heard.
  • Feb. 28 — "Tone Poem," 7-8:30 p.m., Schofield Auditorium. "Tone Poem" is a combination of poetry, prose and song performed to guitar rhythms and the beats of African drumming. This year's theme is "journey" and how the black experience in America has changed.
  • March 11 — Student panel: "Interracial Dating," noon-1 p.m., Ho-Chunk Room, Davies Center. Students will lead a discussion and answer questions relating to their experiences with dating or entering relationships with people of a different race. Societal feedback on interracial dating also will be discussed.
