Journalism major awarded Dow Jones News Fund internshipDecember 27, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire journalism major Taylor Kuether, Grafton, is among fewer than 50 people across the nation to receive an internship award from the Dow Jones News Fund Inc. Her
three-month-long editing internship at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis will begin in June.
Kuether applied for the internship in October by taking an editing test created by the Dow Jones News Fund. The test challenged applicants in such areas as grammar, Associated Press style, geography and knowledge of current events, and knowledge of celebrity news. Fifty percent of the test focused on proofreading and headline writing.
"I felt very prepared for the editing test," said Kuether, noting that practice tests in a class taught by Dr. Mike Dorscher, associate professor of journalism, were particularly helpful. "We worked on our grammar, AP style and editing so I felt I had a really good grasp on each area. Working at the community paper helped keep me up-to-date on current events and one of my professors gave news quizzes every day, which also helped.
"I am looking forward to working at a big city newspaper with readership in the hundreds of thousands," Kuether said. "This is the most gratifying and amazing experience of my life."
Kuether will graduate in spring 2014 and aspires to work for a news magazine focusing on women's and human rights issues.
