Tip Sheet for week of Dec. 3December 3, 2012
The role of information and technology in workforce development will be the topic of a Wisconsin economic summit from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Davies Center. "BE BOLD 2 Summit II: Powering Wisconsin's future with information and technology," will bring together education, business, government and opinion leaders from throughout Wisconsin. Interim Chancellor Gilles Bousquet said UW-Eau Claire welcomes the opportunity to co-host the summit because Wisconsin's universities are talent magnets capable of providing Wisconsin with an educated citizenry to meet the needs of the state's businesses and organizations today and into the future. The 2012 Economic Summit Series provides a summary of policy research and builds on recommendations and strategies presented in the BE BOLD 2: Growing Wisconsin's Talent Pool study conducted by Competitive Wisconsin and Manpower Group. The Eau Claire summit will include a panel discussion featuring leaders from western Wisconsin higher education and K-12. Bousquet will be among the panelists. UW-Eau Claire was named to the Military Times "Best for Vets: Colleges 2013" list, a ranking of colleges doing the most to support military veterans. UW-Eau Claire is one of 68 "Best for Vets" colleges selected from more than 650 institutions. This is UW-Eau Claire's second recognition this fall for its support for military veterans. In September, it was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. Examples of UW-Eau Claire initiatives for veterans include:
- The Veterans Center is a place for veteran students to meet other veterans, and for veteran students, faculty and staff to learn about resources available to them, attend programs, participate in support groups and access a telehealth network through a partnership with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.
- The Veterans and Military Education Benefits Office helps veterans apply for G.I. Bill benefits and advises them about benefits from the state and federal governments.
- The Veterans Club is a student organization that supports military veterans and their families at the university, educates the university community regarding the experiences of military veterans and provides service to the community.
