Ye Olde Madrigale Dinner set for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at UW-Eau Claire

November 19, 2012

MadrigalDinnerEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts will present the 21st annual Ye Olde Madrigale Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in the Ojibwe Ballroom of Davies Center.

The dinner features a 15th-century-style banquet, show and selections of madrigal-style music performed by the Royal Court Singers, directed by Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, professor of music.

The Royal Court Singers, composed of 24 performers, play the roles of a royal court celebrating a successful harvest and excitement of the holiday season. The court has gathered in the manor of Lord and Lady Chamberlain for an evening of laughter, enchantment and beautiful music.

Junior Adam Minten, Green Bay, will play the king, with sophomore Rachel Szurek, Columbia Heights, Minn., as his queen. Sophomore Eric Conway, Rosemount, Minn., will play Lord Chamberlain with freshman Alyse Weber, McFarland, as his lady. The jester will be played by junior Jared Beebe, Platteville.

The performances will include a variety of musical experiences by the Royal Court Singers, the Court Brass Choir, the Court Thespians, Draw and Quarterstaff, and Paula Smith on harp. The Royal Court Recorders will be Lois Scorgie, David Fher and Howard White.

The Royal Court Singers will perform a number of musical selections, including "How Far Is It To Bethlehem?" an English carol by James McCullough; "In Dolci Lacci," an Italian madrigal by Salamone Rossi; "Kolyada," a Russian carol arranged by Joseph Willcox Jenkins; and "Christ the Appletree," an American carol by Stanford Scriven.

Guests will be given a name of nobility as they enter the banquet. They are invited to dress in period dress for the festivities if they choose. The Royal Feast will include wassail, beef vegetable soup, stuffed pork chops, oven browned potatoes, glazed carrots, dinner rolls, apple dessert, coffee, milk and water. Vegetarian entrees are available upon request.

Tickets, available at the UW-Eau Claire Service Center, 715-836-3727, are $30. Tickets must be purchased at the Service Center in advance as tickets will not be available at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. each night, with festivities starting at 6:30 p.m.
