UW-Eau Claire to host Chippewa Valley School Press Association conferenceOctober 29, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host the Chippewa Valley School Press Association's annual fall conference Nov. 7.
The conference slogan this year is "Focus Your Future with Communication and Journalism." More than 100 high school and middle school students from area schools will attend the CVSPA event, which will be held from 7:45 a.m.-1 p.m. in UW-Eau Claire's Davies Center.
Students from middle schools and high schools in Eau Claire, Altoona, Chippewa Falls and many other communities will attend workshops with journalism professionals. They will gather new skills in photography, story writing and the use of media in journalism. This year's event also will include opportunities for participants to use modern technologies and social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
Students will gain knowledge that will be useful for school newspaper and yearbook production as well as submissions to future CVSPA contests. Last year's winners will be honored during this year's event.
UW-Eau Claire communication and journalism students, under the guidance of Dr. Mary Hoffman, professor and chair of the communication and journalism department, are coordinating the event.
"High school and middle school students are the future of journalism and the future of the department of communication and journalism and UW-Eau Claire," Hoffman said. "We are excited to welcome these students to campus and celebrate their excellent work."
As a requirement for the department's strategic event planning course, university students gain real-life experience in planning events. The event's director of operations, junior Alaina Streblow, Fond du Lac, is excited to be working on a project of this magnitude.
"We are learning what it is like to be real event planners. From finding speakers to making the event exciting for high school students, we are always realizing how much work goes into planning an event," she said.
CVSPA has held this conference for more than fifty years, and it is now hosted by UW-Eau Claire's department of communication and journalism. The department is dedicated to the development, integration and practical application of theories, knowledge and skills related to communication and journalism.
Schools interested in attending the event should contact Johanne Swanson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 213-248-1748. Fees for the conference are $25 per school and $8 for advisers. There are no student fees.
