SUBJECT: Blugold tradition spans generations for women's tennis players
Blugold women's tennis doubles partners Gretchen Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson — named the WIAC doubles team of the week on Oct. 9 — have a bit more in common than their obvious talent as competitors in their sport. (The partners in the Blugolds' No. 2 doubles spot have won their last five consecutive matches and are 7-3 overall for this season.)
Gretchen, a North High School graduate and a senior mass communication/women's studies double major at UW-Eau Claire, and Maddie, a sophomore biology major from Lakeville, Minn., both are daughters of former Blugold women's tennis teammates Joan (Pedersen) Bachmeier and Theresa (Retka) Johnson.
Joan, also an Eau Claire North graduate, received a degree in elementary education from UW-Eau Claire in 1986. She played on the Blugold tennis team from 1980-83 and in 1984-85, and she also played basketball and softball for the Blugolds. She was inducted into the Blugold Hall of Fame in 1990. Joan is the North High School girls' and boys' head tennis coach.
Theresa, a South St. Paul (Minn.) High School graduate now living in Lakeville, Minn., played Blugold tennis from 1981-84 and is a 1985 UW-Eau Claire marketing graduate.
