EAU CLAIRE — Kim Wellnitz, an academic adviser in Advising and New Student Initiatives at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is a recipient of the UW System Outstanding Woman of Color in Education Award.

Wellnitz and 17 other women will be recognized for their work at an awards ceremony at the Wisconsin Women's Studies and LGBTQ conference Oct. 5-6 at UW Oshkosh.

"I'm honored to receive this award and proud to represent UW-Eau Claire," Wellnitz said. "I'm humbled to have been nominated by a UW-Eau Claire colleague and friend, and I look forward to continued involvement in equity and inclusivity initiatives."

Wellnitz holds a bachelor of arts degree in communication and Spanish as well as a master's degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Wellnitz uses her position as an academic adviser at UW-Eau Claire to provide a strong support system for her advisees, students connected with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Blugold Beginnings and Commanding English programs as well as international students.

"I hope to serve as a positive role model to others, especially the many wonderful students I'm fortunate to work with," Wellnitz said.

On both local and state levels, she is involved with the American Association of University Women, an organization that breaks through barriers for women and girls. She has chaired fundraising projects and facilitated the recipient selection process for AAUW's Eau Claire branch scholarship program. Wellnitz also served as vice president of fund development for AAUW Wisconsin. In that role she encouraged fundraising for educational opportunities for women as well as research and legal support for women and girls facing discrimination or harassment.

The Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award program is sponsored by the UW System Women's Studies Consortium and the UW System Office of Diversity Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
