DATE: Sept. 26, 2012
SUBJECT: Seniors to enjoy free noon-hour big band concert Sept. 27
UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble II will perform a free invitation-only big band concert for approximately 100 seniors from area care facilities from noon-1 p.m. Sept. 27 in the lobby of the university's Haas Fine Arts Center.
News reporters, photographers and videographers are welcome to cover the event.
The event location in the Haas Fine Arts Center lobby will give the seniors, for whom access to a typical concert hall setting is difficult or impossible, the opportunity to enjoy music from the big band era of the 1930s and 1940s — a time that holds special memories for them, said Robert Baca, professor of music and director of jazz studies at UW-Eau Claire.
Cindy Tewalt, activity director at Chippewa Manor in Chippewa Falls and a 1980 UW-Eau Claire music therapy graduate, organized the event. The fact that the event is free made bringing seniors to the concert feasible for the area care facilities, Tewalt said.
UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble II also will play Sept. 29 in a swing battle with Jazz Ensemble I during Eau Claire Jazz Inc.'s Big Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The Big Band Extravaganza also will include a concert by Jazz Ensemble I at noon Sept. 28 in Gantner Concert Hall. Read more about the Big Band Extravaganza.
